AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above was held last night. Present Messrs J. Ashwell (chairman), A. Frew, A. Russell, E. Carr, and E. Brown. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :—r From the Lands Department, forwarding lithographic picture of the swimming bath at Hanmer, which the clerk was asked to exhibit in some conspicuous place in in the premises under his charge. From the Chief Commissioner, acknowledging receipt of the board’s letters relative to the proposed garden reserves in Arowhenua, and stating that in view of the possibility of claims being made for compensation on account of deprivation of road fpontagp, he did not think it advisable to recommend the Government to reserve a greater area than that which he at first proposed, and tinted on plan sent. He had recommended the Government to give effect to proposed reservation.

From the Geraldine County Council, under date Nov. 18, advising that the second moiety of contribution to the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board was now due, and requesting payment of the samp to the credit of that body at the Bank of New Zealand, Tiinara, on or before December Ist. Amount of contribution, £3 11s 2d. RESERVES. Moved by Mr Frpvr, and seconded by Mr Carr,—“ That Ihe clerk notify the Commissioner that the board are prepared to accept the reserves as proposed, biifc regret he was unable to adopt their recommendations re roads.” On the motion of Mr Bussell, seconded by Mr Frew, the clerk was also instructed to write to the Commissioner and ask if ho Would take such steps as he deems necessary previous to the letting of the reserves by the board, and further to draw liis attention to the fact that the creek was overflowing and damaging private property, and if the reserves were once let it could be made a condition of lease that the occupiers of creel* frontages should dean theub '4'KE OREEtf. Mr Brown said that now there was a prospect of the reserves being vested in the board it might be advisable to go on with some cleaning at once. He moved temporary cleaning of the creek to enable the water to get rway.” Mr Bussell seconded the motion. Mr Carr thought it better to have a good job made of it at once. Some discusssion ensued, after which Mr Carr moved—“ That the creek be

properly cleaned.” There was no seconder. Mr Frew moved—" That the cleaning of the creek be held in abeyance until communication has been received from the Crown Commissioner, provided that be not later than next meeting.” Seconded by Mr Carr. Mr Brown would, with Mr Russell s consent, withdraw his motion, provided it was understood the matter would be dealt with at next meeting if no communication be received. Mr Russell was agreeable, and the amendment was then put as the motion, and carried. OVERSEER y REPORT. The overseer’s report was read and dealt with as follows : « To the Chairman and Commissioners, Arowhenua Town Board, “ Gentlemen, —I have the honor to report that the works authorised at last meeting have been duly completed. A pipe culvert has been substituted for the old wooden one at the junction of Hornbrook and Denmark street, the approaches to the bridge in Maude street have been made up, and temporary repairs effected to crossing in Ormsby street, pending formation of road. Various crossings have been shingled,and the west approach to Princess street has had a light coating of shingle, and the water table made up. The foot planks across the creek in Studholme street have been broken. Now that the creek is so high the bridge is uncrossable. The residents have asked for some repairs to be made to the same, or for a stronger bridge.—l have, etc., “A, W. Gaze, “ Overseer.” It was resolved that the board offer to provide timber to the value of £ — for a footbridge at Studholme street, on condition the neighbours interested find the labor. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of £22 7s Id were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
