GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The Geraldine Road Board met yesterday. Present Messrs Flatman (chairman), Brophy, and Metcalf. TENDERS. Tenders were received for work as follows : No. 369, shingling Beautiful Valley Road.—T. Sugrue, £2S9 ; Daniel Gregan, £232 16s 8d (accepted.) No. 370, shingling road near Coopers Creek, £l4o.—Held over, fresh tenders to be called. No. 371, crossing Orari Road. —P. Burke, £9 10s (accepted.) No. 372, boundary road.—Jonas Fifield, £l9 ; George South, £l4 15s (accepted.) CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read dealt with as under:— From Messrs Hay & Postlethwaite, Timaru, applying, on behalf of Mr Alexander Macdonald, for payment of £2O compensation for damage done to his land through the action of the board in erecting an embankment in the natural course of the stream opposite Captain Temple's land, Pleasant Valley, which diverted the river on to Mr Macdonald's land. Failing payment action would be instituted against the board for damages. —Left over till a full meeting of the board.
From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, referring to board's letter of October last, and informing them that Government has been recommended to Bet apart two acres out of reserve 1821, adjoining the north-west boundary of R.S. 17559, for a gravel-pit, as requested. From Mr G. L. Meason, Surveyor, Timaru, on behalf of Mr Mill, suggesting that a piece Mr Mill's laud at Kakahu be exchanged for a piece of Government road. —The board consent to exchange ; the overseer to make arrangements with Mr Mill.
From the Clerk Geraldine Town Board, asking permission to bury dead animals in board's gravel reserve, just below the stone bridge on the eastern side of the road. —The board consider the site applied for too near the road for a burial-ground for animals, but will allow the Town Board to adopt the cremation process. From Mr W. P. Studholme, sending list of sections owned by him, and asking the Board to make necessary alterations in area on ratepayers roll. —Board regret that the alterations cannot be made. The overseer will make a personal explanation should Mr Studholme call at the office. From Mrs Alice Denoon, asking the Board to repair the house rented by her. —The Board request the rent in arrear to be paid, when the Board may consider an application for repairs. From Mr F. W. Stubbs, advising the Board that its second moiety of contribution to the South Canterbury Hospital and Charitable Aid Board is now due. Amount of contribution, £9O 12s 7d, to be paid.
overseer's report,
The overseer reported : " Contracts —The undermentioned have been completed since the last meeting of the board, viz., No. 364, formation near Opuha Station, and shingle Jones' Gully Road ; No 368, formation and shingle Walker's road, Hae-Hae-te-Moana. The latter has beer done in a very satisfactory manner No. 365, broken metal, Gapes' Valley Road.—Thiß work is in hand, making fair progress, and should be finished before the next meeting of the board. Works applied for—Campbell's road, Rangitata Station : I have visited this road and find there are three deep gullies crossing the road, two of which will require 12in. pipe culverts to carry water from the races which have been turned into the gullies. Borrell's Hill: As the quarry is in possession of a contractor at present, I have not invited tenders for this work, which 1 find will cost a large sum in comparison to the benefit to be obtained. Orari river : The river during the late freshes encroached on the north terrace in two or three places above the bridge. I have had one of the gaps made up with gorse, etc. About two chains in length further along requires willow stakes and wire. General rate : The rates are coming in very slowly at present, £666 has been received to date: Daymen have been employed in spreading metal and shingle on contracts, and in repairing various roads. New side rails have been made and fixed on Pcckham's road bridges, and also for the bridge in Fox's Gully.—l have, etc., " Win. Shiebs, " Overseer." The report was considered satisfactory, and it was decided to ask the County Council to pay for pipes to convey water across Campbell's road; it was also decided to let Borrell's Hill proposed contract to stand over till next board day, BATES. It was decided to sue for all rates unpaid within 14 days, without further notice. rROTKCTIVE WOIIKS It was passed—"T*- 1 • Rou4 * - -.«« the Geraldine | . \ _* stilly concurs in the decision arrived at by the Geraldine County Council in declining to expend the money of the Ratepayers in erecting expensive protective works on the Tengawi flat with a view of protecting the Point township, and other private property." ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2OB 9s 8d were passed for payment. The Board then rose.
