CRICKET.

The return match between the first elevens of the Colonial C.C. and Temuka C.C. was played on the Athletic Club's ground in Timaru—the use of which was granted by the courtesy of the Timaru C.C, the lessees. Such a large amount of water had been run on the pitch that for the greater part of the afternoon it was like a piece of dough, and therefore all in favor of the bowlers. At the conclusion of the play the ground was very badly cut up. There is no doubt the pitch had been specially prepared to suit the bowling of Gray, of the Colonial team. The first innings of the two teams call for no remark, as Thompson, for the Colonials, was the only man who could bat on the difficult wicket, there being quite a nest of " duck's eggs " on each side. The ground had commenced to dry on the surface when the Colonial team went in for their second innings, and a decent score was put up, mainly by the efforts of Macintosh (28), Gray (11), and Kennedy (9), who all batted well for their runs. Only eight minutes were left for play when Temuka made their second attempt, and in that time 19 runs were knocked up. In the bowling department Gray, for the Colonials, did great execution, being well seconded by Boys. For Temuka, Hayhurst and Brosnahan had the best average in the first innings of their opponents, and H. M. Anderson and Dignan in the second innings. Philpott and Macintosh fielded well for the Colonials, and Brown, Mendelson, Anderson, and Low for Temuka. Messrs Buchanan and Curtis kindly officiated as umpires. The following are the scores : Colonial C.C—First Innings.

Brosnahan took 2 wickets for 21 runs, Hayhurst, 0 for 17 ; Low, 2 for 17; Dignan, 2 for 10 runs; Anderson, 3 for 9. Temuka C.C.—Second Innings.
