TIMARU WOOL SALES,

The National Mortgage and Agency Company, in conjunction with Messrs H. B. Webster & Co., report having held their first wool sale on the 6th inst. The attendance of foreign and local buyers was good and prices obtained were fairly satisfactory. Competition throughout was keen and bidding brisk. A catalogue of about 500 bales was submitted, and we disposed of nearly every lot either at the sale or privately immediately after the sale. The Canterbury Farmers Co-operative Association report that, buyers were well represented, and competition for half bred and bright crossbred was keen. Merinos showed an improvement on the sales in Christchurch last week and sellers in in most cases were quite satisfied to take market values. Guinness & LeCren report:—The opening sale of the season was held on the 6th instant. There was a good attendance of buyers and competition up to a certain point was very keen. The prices this year ruled about £d to $d lower for crossbred and halfbred, while pieces and locks were only £d to £d less than last year’s opening rates. We had a most satisfactory clearance, out of 1229 bales, 16 fadges, and 230 bags catalogued only 74 bales remain unsold. [Details will appear in our next]. CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The following is the Corn Exchange report (per F. Denham, Secretary), for the week ending December 10th : Wheat —We continue to report 3s 2d f.0.b., for prime samples, but the pen kicks in writing the last figure, as if it knew sales have been made at a lower price. Barley—We could place a line of stout discolored at a reasonable price. Milling, none offering that is worth looking at, and if the rust gets a good hold there will not be much for the next season. Oats—A large stock still in hand, very little doing, though we get au occasional enquiry for small parcels of feed. Grass Seed —Ryegrass is held in considerable quantities, and no demand locally, and no export market. Cocksfoot can be placed at low prices. Italian and meadow fescue are asked for. Pulse seem to have disappeared. Dairy Products —Active at quotations. The following are prices to farmers’, f.0.b., packages extra, potatoes and millers’ goods excepted : Wheat—Prime milling, 3s 2d. Barley —Feea, Is lOd to 2s 3d. Oats—ls 7d to Is B£d ; milling, Is lOd. Peas and Beans —As last. Potatoes—los at stations. It costs that in labor to put them there. Butter—Farmers’, 8d to 9d ; fresh factory, lid. Cheese—4d to sd. Flour —Best roller, £9. Bran —555. Pollard —60s. CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesdaj’ there were fair entries of stock. Fat Sheep—There was a larger entry of fat sheep than has been the case during the past month, but the prices were not so satisfactory. In the case of best crossbred wethers and maiden ewes fit for export the greatest decline was apparent, and in consequence several lines were passed. Those sold fetched 13s to 15s Gd, yielding a return of 2; t ’d to 3d per !b all counted. In the case of dry ewes 21d to 2('d was t!ie ruling price, and cf these best quality of merino wethers in the wool sold at an average of 3d per lb all counted. Store Sheep—There was a large entry of store sheep, and all lots offered were disposed of at satisfactory rates. Crossbred ewes and lambs realised from 15s Gd to 13s, two and four-tooth crossbreds from 12s to 14s, and merino ewes and lambs up to 13s Gd. Fat Lambs—Prices were a shade easier than last week. Best pens brought from 12s to 13s 3d, medium 10s to 11s Gd. Fat Cattle—The supply of beef was not a large one, and prices were a shade easier than last week, prime quality not going over 20s per 1001 b. Cows brought from £5 7s Gd to £0 15s, heifers £i 17s Gd to £6 12s, steers £6 to £8 ss. Store Cattle—The young cattle entered in the store pens found a ready market at 32s to 39s for yearlings, £3 5s for eighteen-months-old steers, £2 17s to £3 13s for eighteen-months-old heifers, £3 3s Gd to £3 18s for two-year-olds, £4 10s for two-und-a-half-year-old heifers, and three and four-year-old steers £5 to £6 7s. Pigs—There was a ready sale for all the pigs offered. The entry being below the average stores sold at 8s to 18s, porkers 20s to 245, baconers 26s to 345. The prices for baconers were equal to about 3|d, and for porkers 4d per ib.

DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat—Prime milling sorts, 3s to 3s 4d; second quality from 2s ( Jd to 3s ; fowls’ wheat, good whole, 2s to 2s 3d; medium and broken, Is Gd to Is 9d. Barley—Good malting, nominally, 3s 9d; milling, 2s to 2s Gd ; feed, Is 9d to 2s. Oats —Prime milling, and good, short, bright feed, Is Sd to Is 10d; medium qualities, Is Gd to Is 7d. Rye Corn—2s 9d to 3s. Linseed per ton. Potatoes—lf good quality, 22s Gd to 255. New kidneys, £7 10s per ton. Onions Best Melbourne £lO to £l2. Pigs—Prime quality, suitable sizes, to 3fd. DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted:— Fat Cattle—l 24 head were yarded, all good, useful cattle, mostly prime condition. A moderately fair demand was experienced ; bidding, however, was rather irregular at times, in some instances prices ruling being quite up to last week’s, while in others a drop was experienced. Best bullocks brought £7 15a to £8 15s, one or two pens extra heavy £9 to £9 12s Gd, medium to good £G 5s to £7 10s, light weights £5 5s to £6 2s Gd, best cows £6 15s to £7 7s Gd, medium to good £5 2s 6d to £6 7s 6d, light and aged £3 2s Gd to £4 17s Gd. Fat Sheep Only 1189 penned, including about 350 merino wethers, the rest crossbreds, nearly all shorn, and quality ranging from medium to good, with a few pens prime. Competition was brisk all through the sales, last week’s prices being more than fully maintained, principally owing, no doubt, to the scarcity of the supply. Best crossbred wethers brought 14s to 15s 9d; about half a dozen show sheep brought 18s; ordinary, 12s to 13b 9d ; best do ewes, 13s 9d to 14s 9d ; ordinary, lls to 13s; merino wethers (shorn), 7s Gd to 9s 3d. Lambs —429 were penned, medium to good, all of which met with a fair demand at prices about equal to last week’s, best fetching 9s Gd to lls 3d; others, 7s to 9s. Pigs—lß6 were penned. Prices ruling showed no advance. Suckers brought 8s Gd to 14s ; slips, 15s to 17s Gd ; stores, 20s to 22s ; porkers, 24s to 28s ; baconers, 29a 6d to 41s.

AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Sydney, Dec. 7. Wheat, chick, 2s Gd to 2s lid; milling, nominal. New crop to arrive is being bought at 3s Bd. Flour, New Zealand, £8 10s to £9. Oats, feeding, 2s 5d to 2s 7d; seed, 2s 9d. Maize, 4s Id to 4s 3d. Barley, 3s 3d to 3s Gd ; English, 4s 2d to 4s Gd, nominal. Bran, quiet, 9-.|cl; pollard, 10|d. Peas, Prussian Blues, 4s to 4s 3d. Linseed, New Zealand, £l2 10s. Potatoes, New Zealand, £2 10s to £2 15s, with a moderate demand. Onions, £4 10s. Butter, dairy-made, 7d to 8d ; factorymade, 8d to 9d. Bacon, New Zealand prime quality, B£d; hams, HJd. In connection with the proposed Newcastle coal trust, with a capital of £3,000,000, it is stated that the valuation of the mines which it is proposed to amalgamate only amounts to £1,553,000. Dec. 8. The wool market has a weakening tendency. During the week 34,000 bales were offered, of which 31,000 were sold. There was a strong demand by French and German buyers. The following are current prices—Greasy fleece, good, 7fd to superior, 9d to lid ; lambs, good, GJd to 7^d; superior, 8d to 9^d; crossbreds, good, 8d to B£d; superior, 9d to 9£d ; scoured fleece, good, Is Id to ls2|d ; superior, Is 3d to Is 5d ; washed, good, lOfd to lid ; superior, lid to Is Otj-d. Meeboukne, Dec. 7. Reports from districts where harvesting is already completed, state that the yield is very heavy. New wheat is offering freely at 3s 3d for forward delivery ; old wheat, prime quality, 3s sd. Flour, roller-made, ,1.8 5s to £9. Oats, new Algerian, Is lid ; stout white, 2s Id. Maize, os 5d ; bran, B£d. ' Dec. 8. Wool is easier. Greasy brought up to lOd, and scoured from Is Id to Is 2d. Adelaide, Dec. 7. Wheat, old crop, 3s 2d. Flour, roller-made, £9 to £9 2s Gd. Oats, 3» 2d to 3s 4d. Bran and pollard, Bd. MONETARY AND COMMERCIAL. London, December 6. Wool has fair competition. Faulty sorts are neglected, and a large quantity has been withdrawn. Australian, Gfd to 9d.

The Coptic’s butter was irregular. The best brought 120 s ; inferior grades (considered stale) fetched 100 s. The Ophir’s consignment was in excellent condition, both a? to flavor and texture. A portion realised 114 s to 116 s, and the best 120 s. The Britannia’s shipment had deteriorated ; best factory realised Gs, and lower grades, 10s, below the Ophir’s prices. New Zealand flax is quoted at £l9 to £22 for ordinary to fine. New Zealand cheese, in bond, s£d. Butter, medium to prime, 8d to lid. Bacon, 5d to Bd. New Zealand oats, in bond, 2s 2d. The sales of Scotch and English cattle are the lowest for many years, and this is attributed to an over-stock of New Zealand and American frozen meat. At Smithlield cattle show the Queen took first prize for Shorthorns. A quarter of a million’s worth of New South Wales Treasury Bills have been unplaced, and the brokers recommend their tvithdrawal if the colony’s credit is consulted. Sir Saul Samuel has decided to have them withdrawn. The British exports to the Australian colonies for the last month, as compared witli the same month of 1891, show a decline as follows -To Victoria, £378,000 ; to New South Wales, £132,000 ; to Queensland, £33,000; to South Australia, £IIB,OOO. On the other hmd the exports to New Zealand show an increase of £24,000. Dec. 7. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2.844.000 qaaners, and for tlie Continent 990.000 quarters. Bank of New Zealand shares, new issue, £8 ; old issue, £5 10s. National Bank of New Zealand shares, £1 ss. Wool continues firm and competition is good, except for inferior sorts. The imports into the United Kingdom decreased £5,000,000, and exports £250,000 during November. The estimated visible supply of American wheat is 97,000,000 bushels. Washington, Dec. 8. The American imports from Australasia during 1892 show an increase of 2.250.000 dollars.

An old Indian chief, La Pier, has in his possession a remarkable souvenir. It is a lassoo of human hair 50£t. long, and of variegated colors. A priest at one of the Indian missions says that it was made from the hair of wives and daughters of
