CONCERT AT WAITOHI FLAT.

On Friday evening one of the most successful concerts, socially and financially, over held in the district took place in the schoolroom in aid of the sports and prize fund. Mr J. Fraser, chairman of the school committee, to whom is due the credit of getting up the entertainment presided on the occasion. In his opening remarks he expressed his great pleasure at seeing such a large audience, and assured them that a musical treat, vocal and instrumental, was in store for them that evening. He apologised for the absence of several of those who were to take part in the proceedings, but assured them that a sufficient strength of talent was present to ensure a night's good entertainment. Tho first part of a long and varied programme was then commenced by Mr G. Barrett singing - f Maggie Murphy's home," Mrs Burns, of Kakahu, accompanying on the piano. Messrs Strack and Orton, of Pleasant Point, and Mr Burns, of Kakahu, contributed songs, and in each instance wore encored, while the violin solos of Messrs Pearge and McCarthy, accompanied by Miss Pearce and Miss McCarthy, the latter not taller than the instrument she played upon, was certainly a musical treat of high order. The comic element was not neglected in the programme, for the inimitable Higgins was in good form and sang " In our back yard last night." , The first part of the programme concluded with a sketch entitled " Wanted a Cook," in which Messrs Higgin* and A. Clinch ; showed extraordinary drollery, and almost convulsed the audience. After an interval of 10 minutes the same parties again contributed to the amusement of the entertainment, a double-clog hornpipe by Messrs Higgins and Coljins gaining prolonged applause. Tho chairman proposed a hearty vote of thanks to tho performers for coming, mostly from a • distance, to further tho desired effect and amuse tho audience. Ho was happy to tell them that tho result would place a substantial sum to the credit of tho prize fund. This was carried with acclamation. The chairman then stated that ho trusted no visitor would go away without going into the readingroomadjoining theschool where they would meet Mosdamgs Curry and Forsyth, and Miss Stogker,' presiding over tables loaded with Mr D. McCaskill's best viands. The room was thou cleared for dancing, and was soon filled to excess, Messrs J. Hullen, T. and S. Thornley supplying music. Daylight brought to a close one of the most pleasant gatherings ever held at Waitohi.

Olttlstony has expressed himself unreservedly iu favor of bicycling.
