THE PANAMA CANAL SCANDAL.
Paris, Nov. 29, A magistrate, in giving evidence before the Panama Canal Enquiry Committee, stated that the investigation showed that Baron Reinach, one of the defendants, who died suddenly, had received 10,000,000 francs. The enquiry also revealed the fact that a list existed containing the names of six hundred persons who had received bribes. Among the names were those of several members of the Chamber of Deputies. A journalist had also received money in connection with the affair.
In the Chamber of Deputies a motion was brought forward, ordering the exhumation of Reinach’s body, as there is a suspicion that the coffin is empty. Although the Governmnt opposed the motion, it was carried by 304 to 219.
M. Loubet, the Premier has resigned, and President Carnot has accepted the resignation,
