DUNEDIN SPRING MEETING. On Tuesday the Dunedin Jockey Club were unfortunate in the weatlior for tha first day of the Spring Meeting. Rain fell from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. The attendance was small, only about 2000 being present. There were some good finishes, but the weather and the attendance gave everything a depressing aspect. Speculation was far from brisk, only £IO7B being put through the totalisator, as against £6957 last year. The club for the first time deducted the Government tax from investors. Results : Spring Hurdles, of 100 sovs.; 2 miles— Mr Russell’s Magpie, list 51b, walked over, or rather cantered past the judge’s box. Maiden Plate, of 60 sovs.; miles— Mr Cotton’s Wolseley 1, Mr Alexander’s Frivolity 2, Mr Twomey’s Jacob Faithful 3. Four others ran. Time, 2rnin. 18sec. Dividend, £3 9s. Otago Cup, of 500 sovs.; second horse 60 sovs, third horse 30 sovs; 1J miles— Mr Rathbore’s Merganser, Bst 31b, 1 ; Messrs Hobbs’s Prime Warden, 9st 21b, 2 ; Mr Hunter’s Cynisca, 9st 31b, 3. Merrie England Bst 101 b, Dilemma 7st 81b, Tempest 6st 101 b, and Wyvern Gst 81b, also ran. Won by two lengths. Time, 2min. 41ssec. Dividend, £3 16s. Dunedin Stakes, of 120 sovs; second horse 10 sovs ; 5 furlongs—Mr Stephenson’s Outpost, Bst 71b, 1; Mr Reid’s Skirmisher, 9st 31b, 2. Only two ran. Time, Imin. 4£sec. Dividend, £2 3s. Federal Handicap, of 200 sovs ; second horse 20 sovs, third 10 sovs ; 6 furlongs— Mr Stephenson’s Lustre, 7st, 1; Mr Waddell’s Bay Bell, 7st 91b, 2 ; Mr Allen’s Saracen, 7st 61b, 3. Three others started. Won by a nose. Time, Imin, 18sec. Dividend, £5 11s. Selling Race, of 50 sovs; 1 mile— Mountain Maid, 7st 111 b, 1; Gleniora, 7st 41b, 2; Emperor, 7st 131 b, 3. Two others ran; won by a length. Time, Imin. 49sec. Dividend, £3 16s. Maiden Two-year-old Handicap, of 100 sovs; 4 furlongs.—Mr Stead’s Strowan, Bst 71b, 1; Mr Mercer’s Baadonwell, 7st 71b, 2; Mr Stephenson’s Visount, 7st 51b, 3. Five others ran ; won by half a length. Time, 51sec. Dividend, £2 4s. St. Clair Welter Handicap, of 100 sovs ; 1 mile.—Mr Lunn’s Cajolery, 9st 121 b, 1 ; Mr Timpane’s Reflection, Bst 21b, 2 ; Mr McLean’s Conjuror, Bst 81b, 3. Three others ran ; won somewhat easily by half a length. Time, Imin ssec. Dividend, £2 10s. Yesterday the weather was fine at the commencement, and the attendance satisfactory. Rain set in after the Hurdle Race had been decided. Results : Hurdle Race, of 100 sovs ; 2 miles and a distance.—The Idler, 1; Magpie, 2; Miss Ellen, 3. Chevy also started. Time, 3min Baec. Dividends, £ll2s and £2 7s. St. Andrew’s Handicap, of 250 sovs.— Cynisca, 1; Bay Bell, 2; Kulnine, 3. Won anyhow in 2min 13aec. Dividends, £2 13s and £2 6a. A protest against Cynisca on the ground of dark running on Tuesday was dismissed. Onslow Plate, miles.—Merganser won anyhow from Merrie England, the only other starter. Time, 2min 16£seo.
