TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
A special meeting of the above was held on Friday last. Present —Messrs W. Storey (chairman), F. R. Oldfield, F. Hooper, A. W. Surridge, G. Levens, C. Bates, A. Russell, and J. W. Salmond. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received from Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, expressing his intention of contributing three guineas to the prize fund, as usual. —The letter to be acknowledged, and the committee’s thanks conveyed to the writer. Mr B. H. Lowe asked for certain requisites, and pointed out that some new furniture would be required after the vacation. — Left to the chairman to ar-
range. The R.ov. Mr Dickson forwarded, for the information of the committee, a cablegram from New York notifying the death of Mr W. Bryars on November Ist. —On the motion of Mr Salmond, it was unanimously resolved—“ That the committee desire to record their profound regret at the death of Mr W. Bryars, and their appreciation of the capable and conscientious manner in which he always fulfilled the duties of his position as headmaster of the Temuka District High School; and also that the committee of, the Temuka District High School desire to convey to Mrs Bryars an expression of their sincere regret at the death of her son, Mr William Bryars, and their deep sympathy with her in her loss.”—The secretary was instructed to inform the Board of Education of the contents of the cablegram, and ask that steps be taken at once to fill the vacancy. Mr B. H. Low wrote expressing his intention of applying for a permanent position as second master, and asking for the support of the committee.—lt was decided, on the suggestion of Mr Russell that the secretary write to the board reminding them that Mr Low’s engagement had terminated, and informing them that he had, as locum tenens, given the committee every satisfaction, and that they were agreeable to his permanent appointment if the board see fit. holidays and phizes.
On the motion of Mr Oldfield it was decided to close the school on Thursday, December 15th, and re-open it on Mom day, January 23rd, 1803. It was agreed that the secretary write and invite Mr Rhodes, M.H.R., to distribute the prizes on the afternoon of that day.
The chairman and treasurer were deputed to arrange for judges of sewing. Mr Salmond reported an interview he had had with the staff’ as to the method of awarding prizes. They were agreed that they could not be given on the result of the Inspector’s examination, as there would be so many of equal merit, but that the teachers could examine each others’ classes and make the awards accordingly. This course was agreed to. It was decided to devote £l6 to the purchase of prizes, g,qd, on the suggestion of Mr Oldfield, to give an attendance prize to every child who had attended school every half day, or, if none had done so, to give a priz,e to the first six best attendants. It was also agreed to give a medal, in place of a bonk, to the dux of the school,
The chairman and Mr Lovens were appointed a sub committee to join with the acting head master in selecting prizes. The meeting then terminated.
