London, Nov, IS, Mr Sydney Webb, examined before the Labor Commission, gave high praise to the New Zealand Labor Bureau, and also to the effective inspection of factories exercised in that colony. General Booth, in the course of an interview, advocated that the workmen of Australasia should cultivate and ultimately purchase the runs held by the capitalists. The Socialists have petitioned the London School Board to feed and clothe the children of the poor. A committee is considering what can be done. The Turners’ Company and Sir Richard Cotton propose state-aided immigration to the colonies as a means of settling labor disputes. Sir W. J. Clark opposes the suggestion, urging that immigration would not help the woi’kers, but rather tend to injure them, Nov. 19. Wright, one of the labor leaders, addressing an assemblage at Tower Hill, said that London would unexpectedly witness the spectacle of a midnight march of the unemployed. He thought that there was no saying what would then happen, and the unemployed would very soon have a nice and lively time of it. His remarks were cheered.
The cotton operatives will probably consent to a reduction of wages if short time is adopted.
Disorderly scenes occurred during the meeting of the unemployed on Tower Hill. The police charged the mob and many were trampled on.
Mr Sydney Webb, giving evidence before the Royal Labor Commission, declared that the fundamental prosperity of Australia was due to the high standard of the life of the people. The shortening of the hours of labor was partially the cause of that standard, and the wages at present paid in Victoria were relatively higher than in 1856, despite the eight hours system. Lord Herschell has appointed a working man a magistrate at Dudley. This is the second appointment of a like character within a week. New York, Nov. IS. Grand Master Workman Reveler ley is asking the Knights 0 f Labor to favor the Exclusion of immigrants who are unable to support themselves for one year after landing in the country.
