EVICTED TENANTS COMMISSION.
London, Nov. 8. The Earl of Clanricade has declined to personally attend and give evidence before the Evicted Tenants Commission. He, however, was represented by Mr Carston, who, when refused permission to cross-examine witnesses, retired, as did counsel representing Mr Smith Barry. Both legal gentlemen declared that the whole thing was sharp practice. Mr Matthews, Chairman of Commissioners, authorised cross-examination in the later proceedings. At the opening of the commission there were extraordinary scenes between the chairman and counsel representing the land* lords. The Government press sweep, ingly condemns Mr Justice Matthews for his partisanship. The Marquis of Clanricade described the tenants* commission as the plan of campaign. One thousand and thirteen tenants are claiming reinstatement, Nov. 9. Mr Balfour, speaking at Edinburgh, said that the Ministry abstained from attending the Lord Mayor’s banquet owing to differences between Sir IV. Y. Harcourt and Lord Eoseberry over Uganda. He expressed his pain and disgust at Mr Justice Matthews’ partiality., The Opposition press continue to denounce iihe partisan spirit exhibited by l\lr Justice Mathews, chairman of the Evicted Tenants’ Commission. On the other hand the Government organs seek to Justify his conduct, alleging that organised attempts are being made to throw discredit on the Commission.
