PRESENTATION AT HILTON.

Amost enthusiastic gathering took place at Hilton School on Tuesday afternoon, when the pupils of the school and a number of parents and friends met to present an address, accompanied by a handsome album, to Mr Steven, the retiring head master of the Hilton School. Mr B. Skinner, chairman of the School Committee, was in the chair, and opened the proceedings by asking the senior pupils to sing a song, which was much applauded. The chairman remarked that he only hoped they would succeed in securing as popular a master as Mr Steven. In everything connected with the school Mr Steven had taken the greatest interest, and given complete satisfaction. Isabella Skinner then read the following address, which was beautifully written by Elizabeth Kelland, both being pupils of the school: — “ Dear Mr Steven,— We, the pupils of the Hilton School, wish to express our regret at your leaving us. We are sure that we shall never again get so kind a teacher, and, although your own position will be much improved, we are all very sorry to lose you. As a token of the respect we all feel for you, we wish you to kindly accept the very small present subscribed to by every pupil in the school. In conclusion, we beg to wish Mrs Steven and yourself an affectionate good-bye, trusting you will enjoy good health and be happy at Winchester, where we know you will have the love of your pupils and the respect of the people.” The address was signed by 70 pupils. Mr Steven expressed his profound gratitude for the beautiful and unexpected gift, and urged the children to endeavor to gain a good name for themselves and the school by honest and straightforward conduct. When Mr Steven concluded he was literally deluged with bouquets from the school children. The infants, under Miss Hawkes, then gave an action song very nicely, and the proceedings terminated with a service of sweetmeats for the children.
