TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting was held on Tuesday. Present Messrs Talbot (chairman), Jos. Woodhead, and W. Snell. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows : From Mr J. Donnithorne, applying for new bridges to give access to his land. He had patched at his own expense for a long time.-- Grant pipes or timber. As an alternative, if the owner agreed to share cost the board would put in concrete culvert. From the Clerk to County Council re closing road on Mr Rolleston's property and opening another. The council offered no objection. From the Lands Department, stating that where a road fronting on a river had been washed away the right of road always remains till legally closed, and can be taken further back upon private property if needs be. This was in connection with an application made by Mr J. M. Naughton. The Government could not assist in the matter.—lt was explained that this opinion did not apply, as the section for which the road was applied for was never provided with a road. The board requested the clerk to again communicate with the Department on the subject. APPLICATION. Mr Quinn waited upon the board and applied for some formation on the road running through Rhodes's Island. For a distance of 40 chains it was at times impassable.—-It was agreed to invite tenders for same by next board day. overseer's report.
The overseer's report was as follows : " To the Chairman. " Sir,—l have the honor to report for the past month as follows :—Shingle repairs have been done to.McNair's road, Paterson's road, and Main South road. The stock bridge that was over the Waihi Creek on the Smithfield road has been taken down, and about 35 feet of the sound part re-erected over the Ohapi ereek on Guild's road. An 18-inch pipe culvert has been put in Cramond's road. In reference to this work I found that a concrete oulvert (unless made very large) would not take all the water during heavy rains, so I put in 18-inch pipes and am making a ford to take flood water. Wing rails have been put to the culvert at the junction of White's road and Christmas's road, and other jobs ordered to be done are in hand. I have had shingle taken from the Canal drain to repair the Canal road. " Re Mr Gillies's application for shingle : There are about 16£ chains of the road referred to in this application, and the cost of putting on a coat of 12 yards to the chain would be about £ —. —I have, &c, " F. Archer." It was decided to defer taking action with regard to Mr Gillies' application. MISCELLANEOUS. On the suggestion of Mr Snell it was decided to take further action in the matter of gorse on roads at Rangitata tata, especially in respect of frontage on property lately owned by Mr Badham. The overseer reminded the board that it was proposed the previous year to have a new bridge near O'Neill's, and also to shingle a portion of White's road —a work that could only be done in summer. After some consideration it was agreed that the overseer prepare estimate of cost of works by next meeting. The meeting then terminated.
