GREAT FIRES.
Vienna, Oct. 30. A fire occurred in the prison at Collerody, during which many of the inmates effected their escape, and ten lost their lives in attempting to. New York, Oct. 30. A tremendous fire occurred at Milwaukee, the most populous town of Winconsin, situated on the west shore of Lake Michigan. Six hundred houses, the gasworks, and many business blocks were destroyed. The damage is estimated at 90,000,000 dollars. The firemen used dynamite to destroy buildings with a view to checking the conflagration. The fire originated in a liquor store, and, as a hurricane was blowing at the time, spread with great rapidity. Chicago and others sent firemen and engines to cope with the flames. The area devastated is two-thirds of a mile by three-quarters of a mile. Two firemen lost their lives. Accommodation is being found in churches and schools for those burnt out. Sydney, Oct. 30. The four-storeyed premises occupied by Messrs Brovman, wholesale drapers were destroyed b} r fire. The damage is set down as £70,000. The New Zealand Insurance Company have a line of £1450 on the stock.
