THE STRIKE AT CARMAUX.
A Paris telegram, dated Oct. 22, states that the miners on strike at Oarmaux threaten not to accept the decision of M. Loubet, Premier, who is arbitrating in the matter, if it is adverse to them. The Paris correspondent of the London Weekly Dispatch gives the following curious particulars respecting the state of affairs at Oarmaux recently;—Rt Oarmaux an extraordinary state of things is reported among the miners. One of their number, named Calyignac, has been elected Mayor, and in virtue of his office ho is in the anomalous position of taking precedence of the manager of his company. Tito latter threatened to dismiss him on the ground that he was too slack and irregular in his work in. the nfino. The Mayor replied that his civic duties took up a good deal of his time, and he must ask for two days’ leave of absence iu the week. M. Humblot, the manager, refused, and the Mayor was dismissed. When the miners heard of this they became enraged, and several hundred of thorn stormed M. Humblot’s private rooms, and after an altercatim lasting two made him sign his
(..u-n resignati pointing loaded pistols at liia head. When the matter was ths . settled the party dispersed, but M Humblot complains that his rooms have been ransacked. It is fair to add that the miners deny having done damage to property (they lay the blame on miscreants who crowded up along with them) and that M. Calvignac, the Mayor and minor in one, has behaved with great impartiality throughout and did his best to prevent M. Humblot being murdered. The directors, as a matter of principle, have reinstated Humblot and confirmed Calvignac’s dismissal, thus putting themselves into direct conflict with the miners. The masters say that the latter want to be dictators, which they will not allow, and profess to be able to hold out an indefinite time.
