She —" It's a bull, and he coming here straight to ua ! What shall we do V He—" Well, don't stand there doing nothing. Come and help me to climb this tree." Mr Atkinson, the Tory candidate, made the liveliest kind-of fight at Derby for Sir William "Vernon Harcourt's seat. He caused a shoal of writs to be issued against various people including SirW. V. Harcourt himself on a charge of libel. While Mr Atkinson was addressing a disorderly meeting on August 23rd he suggested that Sir William was a wife-beater. This angered many in the crowd, and they threatened to lynch the speaker. He was called " liar " and " coward " and various other names, and the scene began to represeut a public meeting at Cork when the Irish brass band plays. Seeing he was in imminent danger of serious personal injury, Mr Atkinson concluded that the most prudent plan was to retraot the charges he had made. Thereupon the crowd quietened down, and he was allowed to escape. It is needless to say that he was defeated by an overwhelming majority.
