EMBARRASSING EFFECTS OF ETHER.
One of the familiar effects of ether is to make the patient talk ramblingly of whatever may be passing in the mind. Charley Smith has a dear little girl, whom he thinks the world of, and rumour hath it that the two will shortly be made one. Charley had an errand to perform on Wednesday, and while coming down Street whom should he meet but Nellie. She, poor little thing, cut an awful appearance, though, and the woebegone, tear-stained face peeping out from the mufflers struck terror to his heart. She had been up most of the night with a terrible tootache, and wouldn't Charley go to a dentist with her? She preferred ether to gas, and the accommodating dentist saturated a cloth with the stuff and held it under the little red nose. She gasped a bit, but sooon settled down quietly, her ruby lips parted, and she began at once prattling away like a sleeping baby. Charley was standing just beside the chair, when she murmured "Oh, Charley, don't." Charley looked up at the dentist, down at himself, and—- " Mother will see you, Charley : please don't." The dentist smiled grimly. Charley's eyes began to bulge, and—- " Charley, you kissed my ear that time," murmured the sleeping maiden, u au d " The rest was lost on Charley, who had grabbed his hat and started down the stairs, two steps at a time. Charley had to pluck up a deal of courage to present himself at Nellie's house that night and explain his sudden departure, and money won't induce him to pass by that dentist's shop.
