TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present— Messrs Storey (chairman), Salmon McCaskill, Levens, Hooper, Oldfield, and Bates. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read—■ From Mr W. Bryars, head master, on leave, stating that he expected to arrive in the colony-on or about November 4th. From the ' Education Board, to the same effect,'and also asking for attendance returns for past quarter. From the same, stating that the inspector’s examination would probably commence on November 7th. HEAD master’s REPORT.

The acting head master submitted the following report : Dear Sir,—l have the honor to report for the four weeks ending September 30th as follows; Boys. Girls. Total. Number on roll ... 100 100 365 Admitted ... ... 0 2 11 Left 4-3 7 Average attendance... 148 120 277 I also submit the quarterly returns, as sent by me to the secretary of the board. Since I took charge of this school the work has been progressing in a satisfactory way. The staff are working well, and the many changes made during the year will only affect the upper and infant rooms to any appreciable degree. The poor attendance of last month is easily accounted for by the wet weather. The attendance this present month has much improved.—Yours truly, B. H. Low, Acting Head Master. The chairman stated that the quarterly return showed the average attendance to have been 284.

THE STAFF. The chairman stated that the actinghead master, MrW. L. Edge, had tendered his resignation during the month, and, acting on the authority of the Education Board, he had appointed Mr B. H. Low to the temporary charge of the school. Miss Russell had been appointed to the charge of the fifth standard. At the time the arrangement was made Miss Russell was under engagement to take temporary duty at Orari, so that the committee would lose her services for a week. The work of the school, howeFer, would not be interrupted. The committee approved of the chairman’s action. . visitor’s report. The chairman reported having visited the school several times during the month. The work then appeared to be proceeding as favorably as circumstances allowed. The chairman and Mr Bates were appointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS. One account for £2 10s was passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
