AUSTRALIAN CABLE.

Sydney, Oct. 12. The Postmaster-General not having received a reply to his last cable message to the New Zealand Governmentconcerning the San Francisco mail service has again cabled asking for an early reply.

The New Zealand Government have asked Mr Kidd whether the other colonies have any objection to the New Zealand cable messages for Queensland passing under the reduced cable rates. Mr Kidd has replied that personally he sees no objection. Sir Henry Parkes has accepted an apology offered by the proprietors of the Evening News, and has withdrawn the action claiming damages for libel. Sir Henry Parkes has given notice of motion in the Legislative Assembly to the effect that Government ought at an early date to submit a scheme to carry out national works for the improvement of a portion of the public territory and for th e settlement of population \ n t he city and to provide £'Vmanent work for the destitute. The Inscribed Stock Bill has been read a first time. The Colonial Treasurer stated that in order to carry out authorised works £2,087,000 was required. The loan expenditure in the past had been too heavy, and the Government were determined for the future not to expend more than a million or a million and a-half yearly. The unsold treasury bills would suffice to pay the indebtedness in London, including interest to the end of the year, when it would be necessary to institute a policy of strict economy. Oct. 15. Mr F. B. Sutton, Minister for Public Institutions, speaking at the opening of a public school, defended the school system of New South Wales from adverse comments, especially the reference to religious instruction which was made at the "Folkestone Church Conference.

In the Supreme Court Arnold Mathey, John Scott John Shirley, and John F. Marten, directors of the Australian Banking Corporation were acquitted on a charge of conspiracy in connection with the management of the institution. In the case of Francis Abigail (managing director), I-Iyara Nathan (director), and Roderick McNamara (late manager), the jury disagreed, and the Crown Prosecutor intimated that a new trial would be necessary. The husband of the woman Parker, who made a sensational statement to the police a short time ago, has instituted proceedings for a divorce. Newcastle, Oct. 14. The barque Beechbank has arrived from La Plata after an adventurous voyage. For three days she was beset by sixty immense icebergs, and escape seemed hopeless when a narrow channel was discovered, by which she made her way to open water. Brisbane, Ocv. 14. The Constitution Bill has passed the Legislative Assembly by 30 to 13.
