GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present— Messrs F. R. Flatman (chairman), Deßenzy, Brophy, Metcalf, and Kelland. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted for works as under: No. 355, Gapes's Valley Road—T. Sugrue, £290 10s; Daniel Gregan, £269 10s (accepted). No. 366, Fifield's Road—John Fifield, £27 ss; Daniel Gregan, £l9 (accepted). No. 367, Opuhua River Road—Jonas Fifield, £l7 (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following was dealt with : From Mr George Cross, Orari Flat, applying for a culvert on the road leading to Belfield, adjoining his section.—Work to be done.

Prom Mr G. H. Clark. Kakahu Bush, stating that he had beeu unablo to comply with the board's notice re clearing gorse, and asking another month's extension of time.—Board cannot allow extension of time, and will have to take extreme measures if the gorse is not removed. From Mr A. Swingham, Timaru, on behalf of Mr W. Mill, the purchaser of Mr W. P. Studholme's rural section 1U916, Kakahu, offering the board a piece of la) id in exchange for a piece of Government land.—The board consents t > exchange; Mr Shiers to make arrangements with Mr Mill. From Mr H. N. Nalder, Lyttelton, re an exchange of laud between Mr Slack and the board, and asking for plans.— Plans to be forwarded. From Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, M.H.R., acknowledging receipt of board's letter and petition, and stating that he would present it and do his utmost to prevent the subsidies being abolished.—Satisfactory. From Mr 0. H. Verity, informing the board that his time expires for lease of Geraldine Dairy Factory property, and asking a refund of balance of rent paid in advance for reserve.—Request granted. From Clerk of County Council, forwarding cheque for £152 12s 4d, amount of subsidy from Government on account of rates collected by the board. From Mr Henry Herbert Heatley, requesting his name to be placed on the rate roll as owner aiid occupier of sections 20 and 21, Orari.—Agreed to. From Mr Thomas H. Stocker, applying to have his name put on the rate roll for sections 16,17, and 18, Orari.—Granted. From the Commissioner of Crown Lauds, re road to section 3G099 by way of Stony Creek and Round Hill, that such road could only be taken by the road board under the Public Woi+s Act. —The board cannot see its way clear to take land for road under the Public Works Act. The overseer to explain to Commissioner of Crown Lands.

From Survey Office, re the road through sections 24344, 24380, 24405 and 27579, advising the board to approach the owners of sections, Messrs Studnolme and Wigley, and ascertain upon what terras they would consent to road passing through sections.—The board considers ic is not their business to approach owiera re purchasing roads, and must leave the matter in hands of owners and the Government,. From Commissioner Crown Lands, asking particulars of " thirds " and " fourths " payable to the board—The clerk to reply giving all particulars. PETITION. A petition was received from twenty ratepayers of Winchester Flat, as under : —" As the boundary road north of Winchester is flooded, and impassable for either foot passengers or traffic, we, the the undersigned ratepayers, petition the board to drain the road so that foot passengers and school children may get along it dry-footed. The road has been impassable for months." Messrs K. Cameron and M. Kennedy waited on the board and explained the petition, and the board decided that Mr DeKenzy and the overseer meet Mr luwood on the ground, at a date to be arranged, to deal with the matter fully. OVERSEEII'S nEPOIST. The overseer reported as follows : " Contracts : The contracts have been considerably delayed by the wet weather. The time has expired for Nos. 860, 361, 362, and 359. All are naar completion, and would have been out of hand but for the large quantity of rain which has fallen during the month. No. 363, Belfield reserve, has been completed, and passed for payment during the month. The river diversion at tl:» Kakahu, near Garforth's, has aho b on done, and during the late flood tooK a large quantity of water from the main stream. —Repairs, etc. : The under mentioned ruads have been repaired and attended to, viz. : Coopers Creek and Rdiigitata Station Road Boundary Road, Mill Road, Valley Road, and cuttings. Grass seed has also been sown on some of the newly-formed roads, and is growing well.—Floods: No serious damage has been done by the late freshes iji the rivers beyond scouring out the crossing's washing down the footplanks at two places, viz., Geraldine and Te Moan a. The first has been replaced on trestles.—Gorse: A large number, of notices to clear have been sent out, and in a few gasss haye had the desired effect. In other cases, nothing has been done.—Mr Wiglcy's application, Opuha Downs; I have inspected this road, and, ae the work asked for _ oomes within the estimated post, I have invited tenders, due this day. Mr Mcintosh's section I As instructed, I have visited tho Sur'/ov Oitioo, Timaru, and examined tho Government maps, deposited there, and iind a road laid down through MrStudholme a sections, with all distances and bearings marked on the map, and leading to Mr Mcintosh's 500 acres and Mr Bladder s perpetual-lease section. road there would be no access to Mr J Mcintosh's section, as there are deep j ravines on each side of the road as laid off on the ground and map. —Mr Shaw's application : There is no road laid off on the survey maps up the Stony Creek leading to the Round Hill, but the road is pegged out for a considerable distance, and cuttings in the terraces were made some years ago, as the pegs put in by the Government surveyor indicated a road laid off up the creek.—Poisoned wheat: There has been a fair demand for this article. The stock is getting low, and a further supply will be required for the turnip season.—Gapes's Valley Road : This roar 1 . Vim Russell's Creek to the Gapes's Valley Bush requires shingle repairs, but as the board have no gravel reserve in that district there is a difficulty in procuring shingle.—General Rate : I have collected and paid into the bank £223 9s 4d since last meeting of the board. " Wm. Shiers, "Overseer." The report was read and it was agreed to put another trestla at Te Moana river crossing. The board considered the report respecting gorse clearing to be unsatisfactory, and resolved to proceed against defaulters. It was decided to get afresh supply of poisoned wheat, and the overseer was instructed to arrange for shingle for the road between Russell's Creek and Gapes's Valley. ACCOUNTS. The pay-sheet for the month amounted to £l2B 12s Id. The board then rose.
