S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Education was held on Thursday. PreBent— Mr 8. »V. Goldsmith (chairman), Rev. J. White, Messrs Pearpoint, Jackson, Rhodes, and Storey. chairman’s report. After hearing the chairman’s statement, it was resolved, on the chairman’s recommendations, (1) that the provisional appointment of Miss Beattie be confirmed; (2) that steps be taken for the removal of the Redcliff school to the site known as Wall’s; (3) that the selection of Mr Steven for Winchester be approved and his appointment confirmed. In respect to the returns of value of school buildings, Messrs Pearpoint and Rhodes declared that it was impossible for chairmen of committees to value the school buildings. Mr Rhodes said he would state what the building cost, and add that it was in such a delapitatod condition that its value now was nil. The secretary said the architect could supply values of buildings, but he could rot say what was the values of the furniture and materials in the school. The committees all had lists of the first cost of these things to base present values upon. TENDERS. Tenders were opened for additions and alterations to the residence at Geraldine, as follows: —T. Baxter, £lB7 15s (accepted) ;W. H. Tubb, £205 10s; \VMcK. Thompson, £215 10s; W, Waters (informal), £l6B 2s 6d. inspector’s report. Reports by the inspector on standard examinations were received relating to eighteen schools. Mr Gow’s summary descriptions of the results of the examinations may be classified as follows : Highly satisfactory, and behaviour good— Adair, Albury, Oauuingtou, Hazleiburn, Opihi, Pareora, Eangitira, Siiverstroam, St. Andrews, Totara. Good—Fairlie Creek, Wai-iti. Fairly satisfactory— Cave, Pleasant Point (manners very good), Sutherlands. Not satisfactory— Burke’s Pass, Fairview, Otaio (behaviour good or fair in each case). correspondence. A letter was received from the Department, stating that building grants were not available for payment of teachers’ house allowances. Timaru asked for the erection of a teacher’s or caretaker’s residence at the Side School. —Postponed. Pleasant Valley asked for two pupil teachers instead of an assistant. —‘‘ffico to arrange. The Wanganui Education Board wrote suggesting that the Government should be asked to place on the education estimates a sum sufficient to provide an annual scholarship of £SO, tenable for three years, for pupil teachers in districts where there is no training college. During the discussion Mr Pearpoint thought it would be more sensible to ask for more money for buildings, and Mr Rhodes agreed. Mr White suggested that it would not be judicious to try to swell the education vote at present.—lt was decided to acknowledge the letter, as the session is nearly over. Woodbury forwarded an estimate—£3 6s 9d—for fencing required.—Voted £2 in aid. Milford nominated, and the Board appointed, Messrs McLeod and Pye to fill vacancies on the committee. Welsh, Fairlie, waited on the Board to complain that a soil t>l his, aged between twelve and thirteen, had bean expelled from the school by the master, and he could get no explanati n or reason for it. The master referred him to the committee and the chairman referred him to the master. Ho produced a memorandum from the chairman stating that the boy was expelled for “ gross misconduct.” —The Board recommended Mr Walsh to demand au inquiry from the committee, an if the committee failed to do its duty, the Board would step in. 1 he Board then rose.
