ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC
Arthur Mead and John Ferry were drowned at Aratapu, Auckland, on Thursday by the capsizing of a boat during a squall. A settler in the Upper Rangitikei district, named W. Fairfield, was killed on Friday night on the Makirikiri road on his way home from Marton. The body was found on the road this morning, and death is supposed to have occurred through the dray falling over on him. Deceased was nearly 60 years of age, single, and well to do, and is said to have no relation in the colony. John Walkley, a well-known hotelkeeper, late of Palmerston North, died rather suddenly at Wellington on Saturday. He came down by the late train the previous night. He complained of feeling unwell, was unable to sit down, and stood the whole journey, suffering from internal pains. He had been in indifferent health for some time.
