In the sculling tournament Crosse defeated Lambert on a foul; Neilson, with lOsee start, defeated Stanbury by two lengths. Time—22min 46sec. The betting was 5 to 2 on the champion, but he was never in it. Sept. 20. The steamer Friendship has been wrecked on a reef off the coast ofNew Caledonia. The crew and passengers reached the mainland in a boat. The lady passengers suffered severely from exposure. Melbourne, Sept. 19. Free and Co., warehousemen, Flinders Lane, have closed their doors in consequence of instructions from the head office at Paris. The firm has branches in London and Brisbane. Perth, Sept. 17. An exceedingly rich gold deposit has been discovered a hundred miles from the Southern Cross reefs. Nearly SOOOozs of alluvial gold have already been obtained. Sept. 20. There is considerable excitement over the gold discovery near the Southern Cross mine. The gold allready sent down was obtained in a few days and it is said that another 2000ozs are in sight. The gold is obtained both in quartz and alluvium. Hobart, Sept. 17. A wonderful discovery of tin has been made at Lady Bay in the Huon district. The wash is ten feet deep, and gave to the dish.
