MOUNT PEEL ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of this board was held on Friday last. Present—Messrs C. G. Tripp, G. J. Dennistoun, R. Thew, and R. Mackay, A considerable amount of correspondence was read and considered. The Awatero Road Board wrote sending copy of petition protesting against subsidies to local bodies being done away with. —The chairman signed the petition, and it was forwarded to Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, member for the district. A communication on the same subject was received from the secretary of the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board. Proposed by Dennistoun, and seconded by Mr Mackay—“ That the resolution to strike a rate, of which notice was given at the meeting of the board on 19th August, be now confirmed.”—Carried. The question of political influence in managing railway matters was then fully discussed, and the following resolution was carried unanimously—“ That this board is of opinion that it would be a great mistake to allow any political interference whatever in the management of the railways.” The following resolution was brought forward by Mr Thew—“ That the clerk be instructed to prepare and lay on the table, for the information of the board and ratepayers, a quarterly detailed statement of the expenditure in each district, viz., Mount Peel, RainclifF, Clayton, and Sherwood Downs, the same to be entered in the minutes.” —The members present considered this unnecessary, as the ratepayers have a right to inspect the books at any time in office hours. The matter then dropped, as Mr Thew could not get a seconder.

Mr Booth wrote, asking the hoard to improve the road to the bush he had bought from Mr Tripp.—The overseer to inspect the work with Mr Dennistoun. The tender of Thomas Corkery for breaking metal at Raincliff was accepted. The tender for work on Clark’s cutting was held over until next hoard day. Resolved —“ That the clerk be granted £5 towards cost of erecting wash-house and copper.” The monthly pay-sheet, amounting to £503 14s, was passed, and the meeting terminated.
