TOWN BOARD ELECTIONS
TEMUKA. The poll closed at Temuka at 6 p.m., and shortly after 7 o’clock several people collected to hear the result. On previous occasions the poll was declared about 7 o’clock, and the people were surprised when 8 o’clock came, and nothing was heard from inside the closed door. About 8.80 one of the candidates asked through the window when the result of the poll would be known. The returning officer replied by asking his questioner to call at this office and ask us to keep space for him. The crowd scattered, and only a few remained. At about 10 o’clock two others went to the window and asked when the result would be made known- The returning officer came to the door and screamed at the top of his voice for the police, and warned them that if they did not come immediately and stop the annoyance to which he was subjected he would report them to headquarters next morning. This created a great deal of laughter, but though the police were present they certainly had nfi occasion to interfere. After this the crowd thinned and very few remained. At 11 o’clock Constable Bourke went into the polling booth, and shortly afterwards came out and handed our reporter the result as follows: — Blyth, James ... ... 293 Mason, George John ... 230 Miles, John William ... 187 Storey, William... ... 182 Coira, Peter 143 ' Lee, Henry 134 Clinch, Stephen ... ... 148 Cooper, John ,«t tv HO Aspinall, William Gresson 100 Davis, James ... ... 9Q Brewer, Edward Henry ... 64 The first five were elected.
