THE CORBETT-SULLIVAN FIGHT

The Sydney Morning Herald has received the following cable, dated London, September 8 “ The fight between John L. Sullivan and Jim Corbett, for £9OOO, took place at New Orleans yesterday. Betting : 6to 4 on Sullivan, who fought with great pluck and determination. Corbett, however, proved more clever, had the better of almost every round, and wore Sullivan down. He knocked him out in the 21st round. The fight lasted 78 minutes. Corbett fought with great caution for four rounds, and dodged Sullivan round the ring trying to tire him out. In the sth round, heavy fighting took place. Corbett landed six times on Sullivan’s face without a return. In the 11th round Sullivan landed two heavy blows, and Corbett aroused drove Sullivan round the ring. Sullivan fought viciously, with slow blows, short and erratic. In the 17th round Sullivan knocked Corbett down with a low body blow. Heavy fighting followed, and the round finished in favour of Sullivan. Both were cautious in the next round. Corbett keeping very cool repeatedly landed heavy blows on Sullivan, who was nearly out at the end of the 20th round. Directly the 21st round commenced Corbett landed his opponent heavily on the jaw. Sullivan fell, but rose after six seconds. Corbett immediately delivered a tremendous punch on the side of Sullivan’s head, knocking him out. Sullivan tried to rise, but was too weak. Sullivan weighed 2161 b and Corbett 1881 b.”
