COMMERCIAL.
CHRISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE. The following is the Corn Exchange report (per F Denham, Secretary), for the week ending September 17th : Wheat—The cables from Horae this week show a further drop, and some of the mills here networking full time, we cannot see how the late rates for prime milling can hold; second rate and lower grades difficult to place at any price. Barley—A few odd lots of seed selling at good prices, others neglected. Oats—No alteration to report. Beans and Peas—Nothing doing. Potatoes A little more enquiry at a better price in consequence of a temporary shortage, and an advance in Sydney, but we think the large quantity booked by the regular boats, and the chartered steamers, on their arrival will check any further advance, and perhaps create a glut, with the usual result. Ryegrass— Large quantities offering, with little response. Dairy Produce—Firm at late quotations. The following are prices paid to farmers’, f,0,b,, packages extra, potatoes excepted Wheat Good milling, 3s Gd ; whole fowl, 2s 2d. Barley—4s 3d to is ,G,d, for seed. Oats—Milling, 2s; danish mnd feed, Is 8d to Is KJd. Potatoes—Dfet'iv.e.nts, 10s to 11s at stations: kidneys nniah-’able. Rye Grass—Farmers’. 2s to 2s bd > tfijyn dressed, 3s Gd. Butter—Fresh factory, Is, Cheese—3ld to sd.
CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there was an average entry in the yards. Fat Sheep—A few lines of extra g.ood sheep sold well, but on the whole price* were a shade easier than last week. The majority of the sheep were only half fat. y;;d there was a large proportion of merino*. flrossbred wethers brought from 17s Gd to 21s id, maiden ewes and wethers 17s lOd to 21s 9d, crossbred ewes IGs to IGs 9d, and 22s for a heavy pen ; hoggets, IGs 2d, best merinos 11s to IGs 9d, medium and inferior Ss to 12s. Store Sheep—-Store sheep sold well at Us to ids 7d for hoggets, 17s to 2is 3d for crossbred ewes and lambs, lus Gd for crossbred ewes in lamb, and Ins 9d to IGsGd for crossbred ewes and wethers. Fat Cattle —The fat cattle-market was animated, and best beef sold at a slight advance in a few eases. Cows brought £o to X-2 os, heifers, £3 IPs
to £G I7s (id, steers £5 2s Gd t° £8 2s Sd, and £ll 2s Gd and £l2 wa s obtained for two extra prime animalsStore Cattle —Store cattle sold well> yearlings from MBs to 48s, eighteen-montbs-old £2 13s Gd, two-year-olds £3 17s Gd, and cows from £2 10s to £G 10s. ♦ Pigs—Bacon pigs brought from 28s to -12 s. porkers 15s to 235, and stores from 7s Gd to 14s.
DUNEDIN PRODUCE MARKETS,
The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat —Wheat of good quality has inquiry, and finds ready buyers. Prime up to 3s lOd ; velvet and red straw in prime condition to 3s 8d ; other qualities, from 3s to 3s 6d ; fowls’ wheat, good whole, 2s Gd to 2s 8d; medium and broken, 2s to 2s 3d. Barley—Very little business passing in this line. Good malting, nominally, 3s 9d ; milling, 3s to 3s 3d ; feed, 2s Gd to 2s 9d. Oats—Prime milling, and good, short, bright feed, 2s ; medium qualities from Is Gd to Is 10d: long tartarian and other sorts, suitable for seed, up to 2s 3d. There is inquiry for good seed parcels. Linseed—£l3 per ton. Potatoes—lf good qualities 32s Gd to 3os ; inferior, 20s to 25s per ton. Onions—Best Melbourne us Gd per cwt. Pigs—Prime quality, suitable sizes, 3|d to 4d; hams, 7d to 8d ; bacon, 5d to ujfd. Chart —Well cut and clean heavy quality up to 50s; other sorts from 30s to 40s. Salt butter in small supply, 9d. Lard—4-J-d. Beeswax, Is per lb. Honey, market full; to 4d for best. Cheese — ; Akaroa, to large size.
Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, farmers’, 2s to 3s 3d; machined, 3s 3d to 4s ; Italian, 3s 9d to 4s Gd; cocksfoot, to 4d.
Sheepskins—At auction on Tuesday country dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought 2s Id to 3s 2d ; do do merino, Is lOd to 2s 9d ; fullwoolled ci-ossbx-eds, 4s 3d to 6s 9d; do do merino, 3s 8d to 5s lOd ; dry pelts, 4d to Is 9d; butchers’ green crossbreds—best, 4s 9d to 5s 4d; extra prime, 5s Gd to Gs Id : medium to good, 3s lOd to 4s 8d; green merinos—best, 3s Gd to 4s 2d ; light, 3s to 3s 5d each.
Hides—Consignments readily placed at late quotations—say, for dry-salted heavy weights, free from offal and in good condition otherwise, 2-d to 3d; medium, 2d to 2jd ; light, to H|d; inferior, Id to lyd per lb. Tallow—The market is barely supplied, and for all descriptions a ready sale is found. Quotations for best rendered mutton tallow, 19s to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18s Gd; inferior to medium, 13s to 15s ; fat—best caul, 12s Gd to 13s ; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS,
At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted:—
Fat Cattle —103 head yarded, quality ranging from ordinary to good, with several pens prime and heavy weights. A moderate demand was experienced, but there was no improvement in prices obtaining. Best bullocks brought £7 10s to £1) 10s : medium to good, £G os to £6 17s 6d; lightweights, £5 to £0 2s 6d; best cows, £6 10s to £7 10s; medium to good, £5 2s Gd to £G 2s Gd; light and aged, £3 to £4 17s Gd. Fat Sheep—23-10 penned, including about SOO merino wethers, the rest crossbreds. The few ewes to hand did not show very much quality. For good mutton a very fair demand was experienced, for which prices were obtained about equal to those ruling last week, while for ordinary competition was less keen, prices ruling in favor of buyers. Best crossbred wethers brought IGs 3d to 18s Gd ; ordinary, 14s 3d to 15s t)d; best do ewes, 14s Gd to 15s Gd; ordinary, 12s 3d to 14s 3d: merino wethers, 7s 9d to 13s 3d.
Pigs—l 34 penned, mostly suckers pud stores, which met with a very good demand, Porkers and baconers also sold well. Suckers brought Ss to 12s Gd ; slips, 13s toJGsGd; stores, 18s Gd to 21s Gd; porkers, 28s to 31s Gd; baconers, 32s Gd to 49s—a few heavy pigs up to 555.

Sydney, Sept. 14. Wheat, chick, 3s 4d to 3s Gd; milling, nominal, 4s Gd to 4s 10d. Flour, New Zealand, £9. Oats, feeding, 2s 9d to 2s lOd; tartarian, 2s lid. Maize, 3s lOd to 3s lid. Barley, Cape, 3s 5d ; English malting, 4s fid. Bran. Is Id ; pollard, Is. Peas—Prussian Blue, 4s. Linseed, New Zealand, £l2 10s. Huy, New Zealand meadow, £7 10s to £B.
Potatoes, New Zealand, £2 15s to £3 ; for prime lots a little more is asked; Circular Hoad, £4 to £4 ss. Onions, £3 ss, Butter, dairy-made, Is 3d to Is 4d; factory-made, la 5d to Is Gd. Cheese, 301 to sd.

ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS. London, September 13. New English wheat is selling at from 29s to 31s, The wool sales opened to-day with a catalogue of 1U,G39 bales, but the
selection was poor. There was a large attendance and good competition by Home and Continental buyers. At present there is no demand from America. Good wools were unchanged, but short faulty fell 5 per cent, below July rates. A cargo of wheat, ex J. C. Julius from Lyttelton, was sold at 26s 3d. The price realised by the Howden’s cargo, also from Lyttelton, is not made known. Mr Walters has patented a process for x-einoving carbonic acid from cool chambers, which it is believed will be of immense value in dealing with fruit and butter. Mr W. B. Perceval inspected the working of Mr Walters’ invention on board the s.s. Nairnshire. The trial was regarded as successful. The quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 1,996,000 quarters, and for the Continent 1,028.000 quarters. Bank of New Zealand shai-es, old issue, £5 ss. Fresh arrivals of wool to date amount to 34G.000 bales, besides which 58,400 have been sent forward direct to manufacturing distx-icts. The total available for the ensuing series is 331,000 bales, including 49,000 bales from the Cape. A pax-cel of Queensland combings, new clip, averaged Bd. A cargo of Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, has been sold at 32s 3d; Victorian ditto, 32s Gd. New Zealand wheat, off coast, 275. At the wool sales there is increased competition, and prices are fully maintained. September 14. The American visible supply of wheat is 47,200,000 bushels. Brussels, Sept. 13. The Belgian Government refuse to allow the monetary conference to be held in Brussels.
