PICTURES FROM LIFE.
Two little fiow’rets grew together, And spread their petals bright and wide ; They bravely faced the stormy weather, And clung together side by side ; But soon a cankerworm there came And fixed on one, and ate away The vital substance of its frame, Till on the earth it withered lay.
Two little birdies hatched together, Were warmed beneath one mother s breast, And oit amid the heath and heather They blithely played till time for rest; But soon a cruel hawk there came, And from that nest one rudely tore ; And then no longer seemed the same The nest which was so safe before.
Two little maidens grew together, Together romped, and laughed, and sang, Their spirits light as downy feather ; Ah ! loud their merry voices rang. But changed now that scene so fair, For death approached ooe fatal day ; He paused, while hovering in the air, And beckoned one dear child away.
And now that home, before so bright, In which no care nor grief was found , Seems smitten with a sudden blight, And darkened by a gloom profound. —Eawei Francis, Geraldine. I
