GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the .above Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs F. R. Flatman (chairman), Kelland, Brophy, Deßonzy, and Kelland. TENDERS, Tenders for works were received as follows :—No. 361, formation and shingling, Jones’ Gully Road: D. Gregan, £9B 10s; Timothy Sugrue, £96 (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : From Mr T T Painton, asking that the name of Mr Crow be placed on the rateroll, in place of his own, for Section No. 24691,124 acres, Fairfield. From Mr W. Wigley, requesting the board to have road formed through Section 20073, over the creek near the Opuha river.—The overseer to report and call for tender for the work by next Board Day for the work, if his estimate does not exceed Mr Wigley’s. From Mr W. Dixon, drawing the board’s attention to the bad state of the Beautiful Valley Road.—The overseer to report. From the South Canterbury Charitable Aid Board and the Awatere Road Board, protesting against the Government doing away with subsidies to local bodies, and asking the board to support them in their protest.—lt was resolved tnat the board heartily endorses the resolutions of the South Canterbury Chrritable Aid Board and Awatei’e Road Board with respect to this matter.
From the Chief Surveyor, re giving’access to Messrs Shaw’s sections, 36097 and 36099, Hae-Hae-Te-Moana. £390 10s had accrued on these sections and this would be paid over to the board provided the board will make the necessary access to Messrs Shaw’s property so that they can comply with the residential condition of their leases.—The overseer to reply after he has been to Timaru to see map, and find out about the road leading to Round Hill.
From the Tirnaru Harbor Board requesting that the sum of £3BO 17s 9d be paid to their credit in the Bank of New Zealand, Timaru, board’s contribution to amount authorised to be levied towards providing interest on loans.—Amount to be paid. overseer’s report. The overseer, Mr W. Shiers, reported as follows : Contracts —Owing to the broken weather experienced during the month the contracts in hand have been somewhat delayed, but are now making fair progress. The undermentioned contracts have been completed since the last sitting of the board :—No. 355 : Shingle repairs HiltonTemuka road; No. 357 : Formation near Button’s farm, Cooper’s Flat; No. 358 : Formation, cuttings, etc., Rangitata Plains road.—General Rate : I have prepared the Bate Book, and given notice by advertisement of the intention to levy a general rate of one half-penny in the £. —Poisoned Wheat : There has been a good demand for this lately, and I have had to obtain a further supply.—Gorse : A large number of notices t) clear have been sent since last board meeting, but little in the way of clearing has been done.—Finlayson’s Road: This road is very much cut up by the traffic from the sawmill, and as the flood water is now prevented from coming down the road the present would be a favorable time to complete the formation between Fifield’s and the present formation below the creek. —Footbridge : The timber for the footbridge near Te Moan a School has been delivered, and the erection will be put in hand this week.—Daymen : The surfacemen have been employed in repairing various roads, which require a good deal of attention at present owing to the wet weather. The overseer was instructed to see that those who had received notice to clear gorse conform with it at once, otherwise to issue sommonses. INTERVIEW. Mr P. McCarthy interviewed the board, requesting them to remove stones from the road near his section to allow him to clear gorse. —The board agreed to allow Mr McCarthy (id per yard for clearing the stones. SIGNING CHEQUES. It was proposed by Mr Kelland, seconded by Mr Deßenzy, and carried —“ That after the present meeting all the board’s cheques shall bo signed by the chairman and one member of the board, and countersigned by the clerk.” RATES. It was resolved —“ That in accordance with notice of motion given at the last board meeting a general rate of one half-penny in the £ be now made and levied on all rateable property in the Geraldine Road Board District for the year ending March 31st, 1893. The above rate to include Harbor Board and Charitable Aid contributions. Payment to be made in one sum on the first day of October, 1892.” SUBSIDIES. It was passed—“ That this board regret to find that the Government propose to discontinue subsidies to local bodies and as this .would have the effect of increasing direct taxation without giving any advantage to the ratepayers. The board feels it to be their duty to strongly protest against the proposed change.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £GI2 15s Id were passed for payment. The board tnen rose.
