THE Temuka Leader. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1802. LOCAL & GENERAL.

Geraldine Road Board. —The monthly meeting' of the Geraldine Road Board will be held on Monday next. An Old Identity.— John Sibbahl, one of tiie old identities, died at Dunedin on Thursday, aged 71 years. Fatal Shot. —Hugh McPh.ee, 22 years of age, shot himself through the head while rabbit-shooting at Middlemaroh, Otago. Serious Accident. Walter Young accidentally fell into a vat of boiling water at Lawrence on Wednesday. He is not expected to recover. Primitive Methodist Church. — The services for to-morrow in connection with this Church will be found in our advertising columns.

Congratulatory. Sir R. Stout, as President, of the National Liberal Association, sent a congratulatory letter to Mr Gladstone by Wednesday’s mail. Alleged Embezzlement. Charles Tuck has been committed for trial at Auckland on five charges of embezzling the moneys of the Piako County Council. Abowhenua Town Board. —By inadvertence an error appeared in the advertisement of approaching election. The number of members required is five, not seven.

Horses on the Railway. —Two horses belonging to Mr Louis Hausen strayed on to the railway line near the Hinds bridge, on Tuesday evening, and were killed by a passing train. Shooting.— Mr Hayhurst and party, in all ten guns, had a capital day’s sport amongst the hares on Mr T. Buxton’s farm, “ Clifton,” Totara Yalley, on Thursday. The bag numbered (10, a very good average per man. Assembly Ball. —Mr T. Gnnnion. notifies that a grand ball will be held in connection with his Quadrille Assembly in the Volunteer Hall on Thursday next. The success of his last one leads him to expect a large attendance. Wesleyan Church, Temuka. By an advertisement it will be seen that Foreign Mission sermons are to be preached at the the Wesleyan Church, to-morrow. Sirs Dellow gives the address at the evening service. Collections in aid of Foreign Mission Funds.

Sudden Death. William Dav* 3 manager of a shop in Dunedin for th e sale of eucalyptus, died very suddenly on Thursday from, it is supposed, heart disease. H was taken to the hospital suffering from pain in the chest, and died half an hour afterwards.

Finn. Henry Bowen’s sawmill, on Mountain Road, near Inglewood, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night. The loss is estimated at £2OOO, and was uninsured. The origin of the fire is a mystery, and it will be the means of throwing GO hands out of work. The ’Fkisco Maid. The Mariposa arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on Thursday afternoon, though she was not expected till Saturday. Owing to the mail having to be fumigated at Auckland it is not expected to reach Wellington before to-day, when it will be at once despatched south.

Point to Point Steeplechase. —On.' Tuesday next a point to point steeplechase under the auspices of the South Canterbury Hunt Club will take place at Winchester. A start will be made shortly after one o’clock from the township. The course selected admits of a capital view being obtained of the greater part of it from the road lines.

Football. —ln the interprovincial football match at Auckland, Canterbury v. Auckland, the latter were completly overmatched, the former winning by 21 points to nil. More than eight thousand spectators were present. The football match Otago v. Southland was played at Invercargill on Wednesday afternoon, and was won by the former by 12 points (6 from penalty kicks and 6 from tries) to nil.

Arrival oe the Aorangi. The steamer Aorangi, Captain Sutcliffe, from Loudon, |with 67 passengers, 1600 tons of cargo, and a quantity of mails, arrived at Port Chalmers at 3.30 p.m. on Thursday. She left London on July 22nd. Mr J. H. Hempton, the sprinter, is among her passengers. The mails were thoroughly fumigated before being landed. Burglary. —At Temuka very late on Thursday night, i or early the following morning, the premises of Mr W. C. Roulston, draper, were entered and a number of articles stolen therefrom. Mr McCaskiU’s shop was also entered, and quite a miscellaneous lot of goods removed. Inspection of the premises leads to the conclusion that they were entered by windows at the back, but as to who the thieves are there is apparently no clue. Salvation Army. —ln our advertising columns particulars will be found of the Sunday service at the Salvation Army Barracks, Temuka. In the evening the subject will be “ The Christianity of Christ, as compared with the Professing Christians of to-day.” On Thursday next Captain Mercier will deal with the first year’s w ork of General Booth’s Scheme. He will give figures showing the result of the work, and explain the working of the ” --v Match Factory, etc. Ait... " —Hayes ? Great Allied Circus

The show combines an ordinary circus, with its feats of horsemanship, aorobatism, and clowning; a troupe of trained broncho horses and mustangs ; and a troupe of Japanese balancers, tumblers, aud contortionists.

Temuka Wesleyan Rang oe Hope.— The iirst meeting of this society was held in the Social Hall, Temuka, on Thursday evening. There was a good attendance of young people. The Rev. J. Bellow preside -1 , aud Miss ritorcy acted as organist Tim machinery of the rociot" was hardy complete, but a very inter..slang program me was gone through. Mr .Ibellow gave an instructive tidurutt, to welch quit * sittention was paid. Two of Mr Bellows children, also recited very well. Tac meeting was closed by Mr Beaumont. The next meeting is to be held in three weeks.

The Elginshire. •An attempt was made to boat the Elginshire on Wednesday afternoon but failed. The pumping apparatus on board acted splendidly, and the vessel was soon as dry as desired, but she was not lightened Kivtllcicntly to enable her to bn drawn o : f the rocks by the cables which were laid out to the anchors. Cap.tain Millbank says that the steamer is firmly fast aft, and that in his opinion she wants at least two or three feet more water about her nit lie loro she can bo expected to come oil. He declines to say what will now be done until he has received cable advice from Hume in the shape of replies to the messages he seat to Mng-lund,

A Threshing Case. —At the R.M. Court, Timaru, on Wednesday, the case of C. Bateman v. John Holwell, claim £2!) 5s for threshing done, less £7 lls 2d set off allowed, £2l 10s lOd. and a cross-action for £ll 7s Bd, damages for breach of contract, were heard. The case arose through a dispute as to the price agreed on for threshing wheat, and the cross-action for damages sustained through Bateman not carrying out his contract. After hearing the evidence His Worship gave judgment for Bateman for £2l 10s lOdaud costs £ll3s, and in the cross-action Holwell v. Bateman for the defendant for £ll 7s Bd, and costs £1 11s (id.

Rifle Gathering at Sydney. —The Government will grant 200 rounds of Martini ammunition to each man going to the New South Wales Rifle Association’s raeeting-j but will not organise a team for an inter-colonial match. The Union Steam Company will grant return passages at single rates, the fare from Wellington being £7. Entries for all the matches will cost (id, and rations in Sydney 30s per week. Intending competitors should, acquaint Major Somerville, Wanganui, without delay, and practice ammunition will he forwarded. The men should leave not later than Bth October, and the trip will take 28 days. New Zealand entries can be made on arriving at Sydney. Birthday Party. The twenty-first birthday of Miss Rippingale, granddaughter of Mr Woodhead, of Milford, was celebrated last Thursday evening at the residence of Mr Joseph Woodhead, with an entertainment and ball. There were about fifty persons present, and after dinner the party adjourned to the granary, which had been previously nicely decorated, and where they spent a most enjoyable evening. Songs were contributed by Messrs Clinch and Barret, and dancing was kept up util a late hour, when after wishing Miss Rippingale many happy returns of the day, they all separated. The music was supplied by Messrs F. Colville, (violin), and H. Colville (accordeon), and was very satisfactory. Mr W. MeCallum acted as M.C.
