INTERVIEW. Messrs W. G. Rutland and John Walker waited upon the board and asked that some improvements might be effected to the footpaths, etc., in front of their residences at Andvewvillo. They were in such a condition that in wet weather their residences, especially Mr Walker's, were almost unapproachable. The overseer, replying to the chairman, said that there was a difficulty in taking away water. The edd course was round Mr Walker's house, and now any surface water had to make its way through the Andrewville property. The roads here not being dedicated,, the board could not proceed to work upon them. The chairman suggested that those interested should con for with the trustees of the late Mr A, Grant, and arrange, if possible, for the cutting of a water table or through Andrewville, and the board would then do its best to meet them in respect of tho drainage on the road frontage. OYKRSEKK*S KKPOItT. Tho overseer's report was rea I and dealt with as follows :—. ' ( To tho. Chairman, (1 lint, — I have the honor to report for the past month as follows : " Tenders have been invited for forming two miles of tho road running from the Rangitata School, near Mr Airay's, towards Mr Cadwalladei's, and also fcr cleaning about seventy chains of drain on Ilolleston's road. During tho month contract £ No.' 45«, forming part of the Main South road, unci contract No. 54, cutting drain and formation near the Canal drain road have been completed As the latter road has been very badly cut by heavy traffic, I have arranged with the contractor for contract No. 54 to deepen the drain he has been working at, and repair this road with the shingle taken therefrom. The contractor for carting shingle for repairs has not made any progress with this work {during th^
month, and general work has been delayed by the wet weather. Re road applied for by Mr Higgins.—l have had pipes put in tho drain at the junction of this road with Stewart's road, and a crossing will now require to be made over a creek about tea chains therefrom ; about ten chains of this road will not be fit for ordinary traffic, unless during dry weather, until it is formed and a ditch cut on the upper side of the road line. The cost of doing this and making the crossing mentioned above, will b 9 about £—. Referring to the letter from the Department of Lands and Survey, stating that a road could be made on Crn'm land, I find that the greater portion of tlie Crown land referred to lias been washed away by the river, and that it would be impracticable to maintain a road where shown. Two wooden culverts on Crammond's road have broken in, and have been temporarily repaired; they will require re-building, and if done with timber the cost will be about £— ;if with concreate they will cost about £—. I hava been engaged making out the rate roll, and a groat many alterations, of which I have not yet got the particulars, are yet to be made. —I have, etc., " F. Archer." He was authorised to repair culvert on Crammond's road, and re constructone in concrete, also to make crossing proposed on road applied for by Mr Higgins. He was also authorised to have work done as proposed on Canal road when opportunity offered. In connection with Mr Naughton's application, Mr Helmore, on behalf of Mr Kennaway, wrote stating terms upon which a road would be given through property leased by Messrs Young Bros. The cost of this was deemed very heavy, and he was instructed to write to the Government, asking what assistance they could give in the matter, seeing the former proposal was not practicable. MISCELLANEOUS. On the motion of Mr Snell, seconded by Mr Woodhead, it was resolved to supply poisoned wheat free to farmers in the road district. Mr Snell also drew attention to the spread of gorse on roads at Rangitata, notably in respect of land owned by Mr Perry.—The overseer stated that notice to clear had been served, and was now instructed to take legal proceedings if the same were not attended to shortly. TENDERS. Tenders were received as follows : Contract No. 55—Forming road at Rangitata. —Deferred till next meeting. Contract No. 56 Cleaning Drain, Rolleston's road : J. Haar & Co., 2s per chain ; J. O'Grady, Is 5d per chain ; K. Franks, Is 3d per chain (accepted.) ACCOUNTS.
