Several men rescued from the Parkslip colliery died after being brought to the surface. Thirty-one additional bodies have been recovered from the Parkslip colliery at Bridgend. They were in a ghastly state, and only recognised by their clothes. An immense block of buildings in Jewin Crescent, Aldersgate, has been destroyed by fire. Twenty-seven firms suffered more or less.
During the manoeuvres at Bisley, bullets were used to demolish dummy outposts at long ranges, the experiments proving successful. The Post Office is desibus to pay only union rates for the carriage of letters via San Francisco, instead of lis per pound under the present service. Mr Perceval hopes to overcome the refusal to continue the subsidy to the renewal of the San Francisco service.
The Daily Chronicle says that the glamour of the argument about the boundless weath of the colonies will not affect shrewd financers, and advises them to abandon an ambitious attempt to carry on as separate states. An anti-Jewish riot has again broken out in Russia. Many Jews were killed and their houses wrecked.
The Novoe Vremya says that the Russian Treasury is exhausted, and that a new issue of paper money and income tax are necessary to meet the emergency.
Tangiers, Aug. 30,
The Sultan's troops inflicted a crushing defeat on the Tangierites, captured their stores, and burned several villages, including that belonging to Iman, who commanded the rebels, and afterwards escaped. Eight of the troop s were killed, chiefly in an ambuscade prepared for them. (Another account says that in the recent engagement the Tangierites had all the best of the fighting, killing 200 of the Sultan's infantry and capturing GO.) Ottawa, Aug. 30.
