TEMPERANCE.
Mr Knott, temperance lecturer, appeared last evening in the Volunteer Hall, Temuka, the audience being small. The chair was occupied by the Rev. Mr Dellow, who briefly introduced the lecturer. Mr Knott spoke for about an hour and a-half, his subject being “ The Adulteration of Drink.” A judge told him that not long ago in Timaru a brewers sued a licensee of a tied house for breach of contract in selling beer other than supplied by the brewer. An analysis was made of the beer, and the brewer withdrew the paso, as he would not dare to go into Court with it. He insisted that the liquor supplied in this colony was fearfully adnltered, and produced u book written by a French showing I\OW Uquor coulff qiade by iUGtui* . book was bunphofl 01)ly to tho tradoj anu tho V. it came into his possession that it was put up at auction in avuoug.it tho effects of a deceased wine merchant, and purchased by riic Rev. L. M. Isitt. The extracts he road from tho book were certainly a revelation, and, if much liquor is made according to these receipts it is dangerous to drink; much of it. Ho referred to Judge Dennistoun, and said he held 700 shaves in a concern engaged in the liquor traffic in Dunedin. His brother was also engaged in the business. A collection was made, and a vote of thanks, moved by the chairman and seconded by Mr Russell, terminated the meeting.
