CHBISTCHURCH CORN EXCHANGE,
The following is the Corn Exchange repoi't (per F, Denham, Secretary), for the week ending August 27th :
Wheat—The recent returns and cables have made the faces of shippers look gloomy in the extreme, and we do not think the hearts of producers who shipped in the early p.irt of the season on their own account are overflowing with gratitude towards those selfappointed farmers advisers, who pressed them to adopt that course Those who acted on the advice given cannot come out with a less loss than one shilling per bushel compared with local prices then ruling. Barley—None offering, none asked for. Oats—A little more enquiry, but no change in price. Eye Grass—A considerable quantity must be carried over. Potatoes—Derwents still inactive. Early Rose and other fancy sorts we have overshipped. and a few small orders difficult to fill at a relatively high price. CheeseWanted. Butter Keg especially easier. The prices are paid to farmers, f.0.b., packages extra, potatoes excepted : Wheat—Sound milling, 3s 4d to ?>s 6d. Barley—Feed, 2s to 2s 4d. Oats—Milling, 2s; seed tartars, 2s. Rye Grass—Machined, 3s 3d. Potatoes Derwents, cannot quote; Early Kose, 60s. Cheese —4d to s{yd. Butter —Fresh factory, Is; keg, Sd. Peas and Beans—No alteration.
CHRISTCHUROH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there were fair entries of stock. Fat Sheep—The tone of the fat sheep market was easier even than it has been for the past few weeks, and a Recline of Is per head all round wss
manifested. Merino wethers were very slow of sale, and ran from Us to 12s 7d, one line realising from 10s to 18s 9d, and an extra prime lot at from 14s lOd to 15s lOd. Crossbred maiden ewes and wethers ranged from lGs 6d to 19s 7d, ewes from 14s 4d to 15s, and a small butchers' lot, extra heavy weights, at 22s 9d. Mixed crossbreds made from 17s to 18s, crossbred wethers 15s 6d to 18s 6d, and 19s 6d to 20s lid, a small lot realising 21s 9d. A line of halfbred wethers brought 20s sd.
Fat Lambs—Some prime fat lambs realised the satisfactory figures ot 21s to 22s 6d.
Store Sheep—There Avas a fairly good sale of store sheep, crossbred ewes bringing from 13s to 18s ; lines of hoggets from 12s Gd to 12s 9d; crossbred ewes in lamb, 18s 9d; merino ewes, Ss 9d. Store Cattle The store cattle market has plenty of life in it, and all lines of useful stock found ready sales of 28s to 34s for calves, 37s to 49s for yearlings, £3 2s Cd for eighteenmonths and two-year-olds, £3 to £4lßs for two-and-a-half-year-olds, and £5 lis for steers. Cows and springers sold at various prices from £4 to £7 ss.
Fat Cattle—The fat cattle market was well supplied with good and medium class quality beef. Steers brought from £6 5s to £8 12s 6d; heifers, £4 10s to £7; cows from £6 10s to £B.
Pigs—Pigs still maintain their values, porkers bringing various prices up to 255, baconers up to 42s Gd, and choppers up to 655.
DIWEDIN PKODUCE MARKETS. The following is the report for the week ending Wednesday : Wheat is receiving more attention, and any good samples find buyers at quotations. Prime tuscan up to 3s lOd ; velvet and red straw in prime condition, to 3s Sd; other qualities, from 3s to 3s 6d ; fowls' wheat, good whole, 2s 6d to 2s 8d; medium and broken, 2s to 2s 3d. Barley—Very little business passing in this line. Good malting, nominally, 3s 9d; milling, 3s to 8s 3d; feed, 2s 6d to 2s 9d. Oats have had a better demand during the week, with enhanced values. Prime milling and good, short, bright feed, 2s Id to 2s l^d; medium qualities, Is 9d to 2s; long tartarian and other sorts suitable for seed, up to 2s 3d.
Linseed—£l3 per ton. Potatoes—lf good quality, 32s 6d to 35s ; inferior. 20s to 25s per ton. Onions —Best Melbourne, £5 10s.
Pigs—Prime quality suitable sizes, 3jd ; hams, 7d to 8d ; bacon, 5d to 6d. Chaff —Up to oOs; other sorts from 30s to 40s.
Turnips—l2s 6d per ton. Carrots —20s to 25s per ton. Salt butter in small supply, 9d to lOd. Lard—4£d. Beeswax —ls per lb. Honey, market full, 3d to 4cl for best. Cheese —Factory, s^d; Akaroa, 3f d to d|d, large sizes s^d. Grass Seeds—Ryegrass, farmers', 2s to 3s 3d ; machined, 3s 3d to 4s 6d ; Italian, 3s 9d to 4s 6d; cocksfoet, 3|d to4d.
Sheepskins—These continue to have a good demand, and all offered are readily taken up. At auction on Tuesday dry crossbreds, inferior to medium, brought 2s 2d to 4s ; do do merino, Is lid to 3s; full-woolled crossbreds, 4s 4d to 6s; do do merinos, 3s 3d to os; dry pelts, 4d to Is 8d ; butchers' green crossbreds—best, 4s 6d to 4s 9d; medium to good, 3s 6d to 4s Bd : green merinos—best, 3s 3d to 3s 8(1; light, 2s 8d to 3s 2d each.
Hides—A moderate demand exists; and prices remain steady, at about equal to those obtaining during the past twelve months or more. Drysalted heavy weights, in good condition, 2£d to 3d ; medium, 2d to 2J-d ; light, l-|d to If d; inferior, Id to per lb.
Tallow A good demand, all available lots being easily placed. Prime rendered mutton, 19s to 20s ; medium to good, 16s to 18s Gd; inferior to medium, 13s to 15s. Hough fat: Best fresh caul, 12s 6d to 18s; inferior to medium and good, 9s to 12s per cwt. DTJNEDIN STOCK MARKETS. At the Burnside Market on "Wednesday the following business was transacted:— Fat Cattle—24o head yarded. In quality the best all round that have been seen in Burnside for many a day. The supply being rather excessive, prices suffered a decline of from 10s to 15s a head from those ruling last week. Bullocks sold at £6 10s to £9 10s; cows, £5 5s to £8 10s.
Fat Sheep —2240 penned, including 500 merinos, quality considerably below the standard of late supplies. In the absence of freezing buyers, sales were quiet, and prices declined 6d to Is 6d from last week. Best wethers (an odd pen or two) brought 17s to 19s 3d; others, 14s to 16s; ewes 12s to 15s ; one pen extra to 18s ; merinos, 10s 6d to 12s Gd,
Pigs—2oo penned, and sold under brisk competition at late rates. Quotations : Heavy weights brought 65s 6d to 665; medium, 32s 6d to 375; and weaners 7s.
ENGLISH AND FGHBTGN MARKETS. London, August 28. The depression in the cotton trade in Lancashire is very acute, and many mills have suspended operations. Silver is quoted />s 1 15/16d. There was a good attendance at the Antwerp wool sales, and the bidding was conducted with animation. Previous prices were maintained for all classes of wool. 1250 bales of River Plate were sold put of 2850 offered. Mr Munro has informed the authorities that Victoria would be willing to divide the profits with the English mint if allowed the privilege of coining silver. The Marquis of liipon,
Colonial Secretary, promised to push the matter to a conclusion.
August 24. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,276,000 quarters, and for the Continent 864,000 quarters. The American visible supply of wheat is 39,700,000 bushels. Lisbon, August 24.
The Portuguese Government have just authorised the importation of 12,000.000 kilos of wheat monthly, for a period of ten months, to supplement the harvest.
Calcutta, August 23. Mr Barbour, director of Indian finances, recommends the adoption of a system of double legal tender by an international agreement to meet the silver crisis, and asserts that a common standard of value in India and England is absolutely essential. St. Peterkbukg, August 23. The prohibition on the export of rye from Russia has been withdrawn.
