AUSTRALIAN CABLE.
Sydney, Aug. 12. Sir H. Parkes condemned the importation of coolies, and advocated the establishment of irrigation colonies as a remedy for want of employment. Melbourne, Aug. 12. The British India steamer brings news of the foundering of the steamer Milton, and the arrival of a portion of the crew at Singapore, after knocking about in boats for two days and a half. A panic occurred when it was found the steamer was sinking, the native crew made a rush for the boats and six were drowned in one boat. Altogether fifteen hands are missing. Aug. 11. At the conference of Victorian, New South Wales, and South Australian delegates concerning the cable guarantee, the Postmaster-General of the last named colony moved that the proposal to join in the guarantee at the end of the year be accepted. After further discusssion the conference was adjourned till Monday. Brisbane, Aug. 12.
The defeat of the Constitution Bill, so far as the setting up of a central province is concerned, is causing some excitement at Rockhampton. A crowd burned in effigy leading members who opposed the Bill. Aug. 13. The Rev. Mr Dawes was elected Bishop of Rockhampton. Hobart, Aug. 12. The Government were defeated on their financial policy by four votes, and the House adjourned till Tuesday. The Government will resign.
