AFGHANISTAN.
Calcutta, Aug. 9. The Hazara rebellion is increasing in extent. All the great tribes have joined the revolt. The Ameer has raised 40,000 troops, and is levying more, promising as a reward to divide the rebels' land amongst his soldiers. St. Petersburg, Aug. 9. Russian troops have compelled the Chinese to withdraw from the Pamir Plateau. Military material is being forwarded from Odessa to Pamir. Aug. 10. The Russian expedition in the Pamir has changed its basis from Nanghilan to Ush, both towns in the Ferghana district, abutting on thePamir plateau. The Novosti considers that it is impossible for Russia to permit England to occupy Afghanistan. London, Aug. 10. The Times' St Petersburg correspondent wires that the Russians are asserting their right to occupyStuphnin in Pamir, and are also ejecting the Chinese from Kashgar. A Russian expedition is said to be moving southward in the direction of Afghanistan. Aug. 10. Captain Younghusband, who was in command of a recent British expedition to the Pamir Plateau, has been sent to Gilgit to watch the progress of even's. Aug. 11. The Ameer is powerless to punish the revolting tribes.
