THE REBELLION IN AFGHANISTAN.
London, Aug, 4. Professor Arminius Yambery, the great Eastern authority, considers the rebellion a serious matter and believes it to be due to liussian intrigues, and is coidident that the Ameer must eventually appeal to England for assistavce. Calcutta, Aug. 4. The position in Afghanistan is critical. Two British mail-carriers have been shot at Gomel. The Ameer’s troops who were despatched against the rebellious Hazaras have mutinied. Aug. G. The Viceroy proposes to send the Comm nider-in-Chief, Lord Roberts, to .Jcllabad to meet the Ameer of Afghanistan with a strong escort. A serious affair is reported to have occurred at Somatash. in the Pamir, on the boundary line between Afghanistan and China. Some Afghan troops came into collision with 30 Russian soldiers belonging to one of the parties now in that district. The Afghans killed five of them and captured 16, whom they hold as prisoners and refuse to release. The Russians vow that in the future they will neither give nor take quarter. It is reported that among the Hazara rebels who have been captured are five Russians, who have been sent in chains to Cabul.
