IMPERIAL POLITICS.

London, Aug I. The Hon. Mr Peel has been reelected Speaker of the House of Commons. The swearing in of members will continue till Monday, and the No Confidence dedate will take place next week. Mr Gladstone, Mr McCarthy, and Mr Dillon are arranging for a division on the no confidence motion. Mr Asquith, Q.C., will move, and Mr Burt will second, the amendment on the Address in Reply. Mr Mil vain has decided not to oppose Mr Morley’s re-election. It is believed that Mr Gladstone has satisfied the Nationalist leaders as to the nature of his scheme for Home Rule, A petition has been lodged against the return of Mr Frank James (Conservative) for "Walsall. Aug. o. Mr Justin MacCarthy has been elected sessional chairman of the Nationalist party, assisted by a council consisting of Messrs Blake, Davitt, Tim Healey, Sexton, O’Brien. Dillon, Arthur O’Connor, and T. P. O’Connor.

.Speaking at the Eighty Club Mr Blake advocated a wide measure for Home Rule, but admitted that the Imperial Parliament should be able to suspend the Irish constitution, though it would be unwise to hamper Mr Gladstone’s freedom of action when Home Rule was once fairly launched. Legislation on labour, social, and electoral questions should follow. He contended that the experience of Canada showed that rivalry of creed had proved a safeguard to autonomy. Sir Charles Dilke proposes early next session a motion to the effect that Egypt be neutralised under an European guarantee.

Parliament will probably prorogue on August 27th until the middle of January, Mr Gladstone will speak on the amendment of no confidence, following the seconder, Mr Burt. The dockers escorted Mr Keir Hardy, Labor member, to Parliament Buildings in procession, singing the ‘•Marseillaise.” Great enthusiasm was shown by those taking part in the proceedings.
