GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the above was held yesterday. Present —Messrs Flatman (chairman), Deßenzy, Kelland, Brophy, and Metcalf. TENDERS. Tenders for works were received and dealt with as follows :
No. 360, cutting fences reserve Geraldine district —Wm. Fly, £6 18s; Richard Richards, £5 18s ; Phylin Buckley, £5 (accepted). No. 361, trimming fences reserve Woodbury district—Walter Gaiger, £8 15s (accepted). No. 362, formation etc., Macdonald’s road, Raukapuka district —Daniel Gregan, £34 10s ; Thomas Corkery, £2B; Jonas Fiefield, £24; M. Lawlor, £2l, and 2s per yard for rock (accepted). No. 363, formation etc., Seward’s road and Kelman’s reserve—Patrick Burke, £2O ; M. Lawlor, £ls, accepted on condition that No. 362 contract is completed first). . CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was received and dealt with as under : From Mr C. G. Tripp, asking the board to make good do mage done to his property by contractor while shingling roads. —The board will sow grass seed and make good all fences they cut to get at the work, but do not feel called upon to do the extras asked for. From the Bank of New South Wales, Geraldine, stating that the board’s current account had been credited with a deposit of £SOO, and interest accrued on £3500, and the sum of £3OOO was renewed for twelve months.
From the Bank of New Zealand, sending board’s fixed deposit receipts for £3OOO and £SOO respectively. From Mr D. Macdonald, Woodlands, asking the board to shingle the upper portion of the Beautiful Valley road, as it was hardly suitable for dray traffic. —As this would be a costly work the board cannot consider the traffic on the road warrants the expenditure. From Property Tax Department, Wellington, sending a voucher for the payment of £152 12s 4d, subsidy due to the board.
From the Land and Income Tax Department, informing the board tnat the valuation roll for the triennial period commencing April Ist, 1892, had been sent. | |From the Secretary Geraldine County Council, informing the board that the Levels Road Board had applied to the council to undertake the destruction of small birds within the whale of the Geraldine Counfy- As there was a diversity of opinion on the matter among the members of the council they wished an expression of opinion.—‘•Copy of letter from this board to the Secretary of Agriculture to be forwarded to the council, also resolution thereon.
Prom the Audit Office, forwarding board’s balance-sheet for year to March 31st, 1892. From Mr B, W. Macdonald, claiming £3O for damages to his property owing to the board’s action in turning the river through it,—Board cannot entertain the claim.
From the Department of Agriculture, enclosing circular re Arbor Day.—Board did not receive this circular in time to take any action, and would suggest that circulars be sent out earlier another year. OVERSEERS' REPORT.
The overseer reported as follows : '« The weather having been very favorable good-progress has been made since last meeting with the various contracts in hand. Nos. 355, and 356, has been completed. No. 357 will be out of_ hand in a few days, and Nos. 358 and 359 are making fair progress. As the metal on many of the old shingled roads have been worn during the dry seasons, a good deal of shingle has been carted for repairs to various roads during the past twp months; less of this will now be required as the sttn gets more power. Drain pipes: One truck of pipes has been ordered and are now to hand ; they are very good quality. Poisoned wheat; There has been a brisk demand for this article during the past week. The stock being exhausted, I have ordered four bushels from Ashburton. Gorse : As I htVYO issued several notices sines last Meeting. A new notice-book is now required. Walker’s appplication ; This is fora short length of about 6 chains leading river near Mr Wajkpr’ij Jjquse, to dqepqh the fencedraiq, forpi arid shingle. Reread, iipd make his entrance. Macdonald’s application ; A instructed, tenders, due this, day, have btpu invited for fqrrqation of a narrow track plqng the base of the do,wn,s 3
to give access to the land. Valuation Roll; The new roil was forwarded from Wellington a few days ago, and I am engaged in preparing the rate-book and making the necessary corrections, which, I find to be numerous. Balance sheet ; The balance-sheet has been returned, by the Auditor-General and certified as correct. —I have, etc., “ Wm. Skiers. “ Overseer.” It was decided to order a new notice book. Mr Deßenzy was instructed to report at next meeting re Mr Walters application. The rest of the report was approved of by the board. INTERVIEWS.
Mr C. Jessop, representing himself and other settlers at Pleasant Valley, waited on the board to have a bridge made over the Hae-Hae-te-Moana, to allow school children to cross.—The board agreed to make a plank crossing. Mr W. Shaw appeared before the board and slated that the Commissioner had given him notice that he would be compelled to have a residence on his land at Hae-hae-te-moana Gorge, and asked the board if they would make a road to his property.—The board considered that they could not be compelled to make the road, but they would urge the Commissioner to exempt Mr Shaw from being obliged to build a residence at this place. GENERAL RATE. The following notice of motion was handed in—“ That it is the intention of the board at its next meeting to levy a rate of one penny in the £ on the rateable value of all property in the Geraldine Road District for the year ending 31st March, 1893.” ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2BO 2s 2d were passed for payment. SMALL BIRDS NUISANCE. The following motion, moved by Mr J. Kelland and seconded by Mr W. De Renzy, was carried opinion of this board the small bird nuisance can be much more effectually dealt with by road and town beards than by county councils, and notwithstanding the trouble and cost attached to the gathering of eggs and birds the large number collected amply justifies the expenditure, and with the aid of legislation and systematic action by the minor local bodies the pest can at least be kept in check.” CONDOLENCE. Mr Deßenzy moved, Mr Kelland seconded, and it was carried—“ That this boaid desires to sympathise with Mr and Mrs Shiers in their recent severe bereavement, and that the same be entered in the minutes.” The board then rose.
