CHRISTCHURCH STOCK MARKETS. At the Addington yards on Wednesday there was a large entry of stock. Store Sheep—A capital demand existed. Crossbred ewes in lamb sold readily at from 14s Gd to IGs lid, and a line of halfbred ewes with lambs brought 18s. Hoggets realised from 9s 3d to 18s, one very small line being disposed of at 8s and a line of mixed crossbreds sold at 15s. Merino ewes in lamb sold at from 8s Id to 8s lid, and a few wethers were difficult to dispose of at 7s 6d and 8s 2d. Fat Sheep—The entry of fat sheep was a singularly large one. The sale was not satisfactory to buyers or sellers, as the stock train from the south, which is usually alongside the yards long before daylight, did not arrive till after eleven o'clock in the morning, and its contents—7l trucks of sheep, numbering nearly 4000 —had to be hurried into the market, which they completely glutted. The result was that, with the exception of the prim est freezers, there was an irregular market, and toward its close values fluctuated. As a consequence a large proportion of the entry was withdrawn, and a good many were disposed of at a considerable sacrifice. For best freezing wethers and maiden ewes, from 19s to 23s lOd was given, prices varying from Bij?d to 3fd per pound, all counted; but the sale of crossbred ewes and merinos was so varied as to render it impossible to note a value. Some very good merino wethers were sold up to 15s lid, and some went as low as 9s lid. Fat Cattle —There was an improved sale of beef because there was less of it, and there was a local demand that did not exist last week. The result was a sharp rise, best steers selling at from £7 10s to £lO. Heifers sold proportionately, best beef yielding from 19s to 21s per 1001 b without difficulty. Good sorts of cows realised from 17s.
Store Cattle, &c.—A good deal of activity was noticeable in the store cattle sale, all the young stock offered being snapped up at advanced prices. One small lot of calves brought 15s, but with that exception lines of young cattle less than fifteen months old brought from 21s to 435. Two to two-and-a-half-year-old heifers sold at from £3 2s Gd to £3 7s Gd, and steers from £2 12s Gd to £3 Gs. Eighteenmonth heifers brought up to 535, and three-year-olds £4 to £4 7s. There was a good sale of dry cows, springers and dairy cows, several dairy cows being sold at £5 to £8 10s. Pigs—There was a further improvement in the sale of bacon pigs. Handysized baconers brought from £1 Gs to £2 8s Gd, yielding equal to per lb, and in some cases a trifle above this, while porkers realised from 15s to 2Gs, equal to 4d per lb all round. ENGLISH AND FOREIGN MARKETS. London. August 3. Samuel Allsopp and Sons, Limited, show a profit of £85,000 for the year and pay a dividend of five per cent.
The Investors' Review in an article on the colonies asserts that the heavily laden residents of New Zealand may regard the graduated tax on real estates as emancipation from the tyranny of land lords, but that English investors consider that confiscation more than neutralises the soothing effect of abstention from borrowing, which has already done immense mischief and would bear bitter fruit. Only some such step by the Government would bring the finances into a healthy condition. The Review goes on to say that had the recent Victorian loan failed the Government would have had to make default before the end of the year.
The American visible supply of wheat is 31.300,000 bushels.
