GENERAL ASSEMBLY.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. on Friday. The Statutes Revision Committee recommended that the Testamentary Trust Restriction Bill be not allowed to proceed. The Wellington Sanitation Loan Bill, Wanganui Hospital Bill, and Palmerston North Courthouse Bill were put through their final stages. The Council rose at 3.30 p.m. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. The House met at 2.30 p.m. on Friday. REPORT. The Premier moved that the report of the Select Committee on the Wesleyan Methodist Church Property Trust Act 1887 Amendment Bill be agreed to. Mr Sandford moved an amendment, the effect of which was that no Wesleyan Minister should be allowed to remain in any district more than five years. A lengthy discussion ensued, and eventually Mr Sandford's amendment was lost by 32 to 30, and the_ Premier's motion was carried by 40 to 15. SIR GEORGE GREY. Further leave of absence for fourteen days was granted to Sir George Grey on account of illness. GOVERNMENT BUSINESS. On the motion of the Premier it was decided that Government business should take precedence on Wednesdays. THE FINANCIAL DEBATE. Mr Smith (New Plymouth) resumed the debate on the Financial Statement. He stated that all our institutions were in a flourishing condition, that the Government should be proud of the fact that their finances were sound, and that they ■were settling the people on the land on most advantageous terms. One of the reasons why he supported the present Government was because they were doing their best for all classes of the community. The House adjourned at 5.30 p.m., and resumed at 7.30. Mr Smith, continuing his remarks, strongly advocated the Stratford route of the North Island Trunk Railway, and expressed the opinion that there was enough good land between Taranaki and Auckland to pay off the national debt of New Zealand.
The debate was continued by Messrs Bruce, Rees, Mills, and J. W. Kelly. At 12.20 Mr Buckland moved the adjournment of the debate, and the House rose.
