DISASTROUS ERUPTION.
Sydney, July 25. Further particulars of the disastrous eruption show that at G o’clock on June Bth, the volcano of GunongAroo on the Island of Sangier, broke out without warning, and for three hours blenched forth dames and smoke, ashes and stones. This was followed by a heavy rain of dust and ashes, which continued all night, but there were no earthquakes. On the night of the 9th there were heavy rumblings in the mountains, and a slight eruption of mud and ashes, followed again by a terrific rain of mud and debris. The village of Toreeno was covered with ashes, and many houses were crushed by the weight. The plantations were entirely destroyed, and vegetation burned up. The north side of the island is almost demolished, and whole villages were buried. It is believed that the loss of life will be terrific. Many bodies have been already recovered. There were tidal waves, but the shipping is safe. Several relief vessels have reached the island.
