FOOTBALL.
WAIHI FIRST V. TIMARU FIRST. The above match took place at Timarp on the 23rd inst,, in the presence of a large number of spectators, who slightly favored Waihi, frequently calling on the “faithful few” to play hard, this expression arising through Waihi playing two men short. Owing to the late rains the ground was heavy, and the leather difficult to handle. Despite this, however, the game was a fast and even one, and a good deal of passing was indulged in. There was an absence of tight scrummaging, which makes the play so tedious from an onlookers point of view. In the first spejl Timarp had slightly $lO best of the play, and secured a try. This was the result of a pretty piece of play, the ball being passed from the line out to Perry, who, after a short run, transferred it to Cocks, that player running in and touching down near the corner flag. Wigley’s attempt, a splendid one, went just a little wide. In the second spell Waihi, especially towards the finisfy, has much the advantage, scoring twice. Botli were good runs, the respective tries being obtained by C. and A. Qpie. In securing his try C, Opie displayed cupping ppq judgment as well as speed. I). Stewprt placed two neat goals front the tries, Waihi thus won the matph by IQ poipts to 2. Pqr the losers Perry and Cocks played well bach, apd their forwards played a fair, though not brilliant game, For the winners T. Hart and C. Opie played an almost faultless game, while the forwards played together with considerable dash. The game was played in a friendly spirit. Messrs Helean and Mac Alister acted as touch line umpires, and Mr Gill carried out tine dptiea qf referee. 1; ' ' t -' !t l " K!| ‘ " 4 ' ,l
