DUNEDIN STOCK MARKETS.

At the Burnside Market on Wednesday the following business was transacted: — Fat Cattle —-160 head yarded, consisting for the most part of good to prime beef, and the balance medium quality. For prime beef competition was brisk throughout the sales, but for other descriptions bidding was less spirited, and prices obtained all round were just about equal to those of last week. The supply was quite sufficient for trade requirements. Best bullocks brought £7 10s to £9; medium quality, £5 10s to £7 5s ; light and inferior, £4 to £5 ss; best cows, £G to £6 17s 6d; medium, £4 Ts Gd to £5 15s; light, £2 7s Gd to £4. Fat Sheep—229B penned, and of these 300 were merino wethers. The crossbreds, with the exception of a fewpens, were not first class. The sale opened well, aud a strong demand was experienced right through. Prices obtained were quite up to those lately ruling. Best crossbred wethers brought 17s Gd to Bis; medium to good, 13s (3d to 16s 6d; best crossbred ewes, 15s to lGs '.ld; medium, 13s to 14s 9cl ; and merino wethers, Ss to 12s Gd. Pigs —Only 27 were penned, mostly suckers, with a few porkers, and two and two or three baconers, and all descriptions sold well. The North Sydney municipal loan of £35,000 at per cent, has been subscribed locally three-fold at an averag e price of £9O 17s. July 21. The Government are calling for tenders for 175,000 steel rails manufactured in the colony from colonial products. The Government have arranged a loan of £500,000 at 4£ per cent., with four years' currency. The money will be obtained from the New South Wales Savings Bank. The Colonial Treasurer will be able to carry on to the end of the year without further borrowing. Melbourne, July 20. AVheat is quiet at 3s Flour, stone-made, £8 10s to £8 los; rollermade, £9 9s to £9 15s. Oats, Algerian, 2s Hd; stout, 2s 3d. July 21. At a meeting of shareholders of the Mercantile Bank it was stated that shareholders would lose £300,000 before the bank could be made to pay 20s in the pound. At a meeting of shareholders in the New Zealand and Eiver Plate Land and Mortgage Company Limited, Mr Thomas Russell, a director, stated that the depreciation in New Zealand securities if written off now, would not amount to £50,000. It was resolved to abolish the Colonial Board. July 20. Tfiere has been an all-round rise in colonial Government stocks owing to a considerable purchase for the purpose of investment. The American visible supply of wheat is 30,400,000 bushels.
