CALEDONIAN SOCIETY.
The social under the auspices of the Temuka Caledonian Society last Thursday evening was a great success, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather. The evening was very murky, with a drizzling rain falling, and doubtless this had the effect of keeping a great many people i,way, but, notwithstanding this, there were between 35 and 40 couples present, and there waa no room for many more. The arrangements were all that could be desired; Mr McCaskill provided; the refreshments; Messrs McCarthy (violin,) and Levens (piano,) supplied excellent music ; Miss Quinn played a waltz, and Mrs Clark a Highland reel in a delightful manner, and Mr W. McCallum made an efficient M.C. The programme of dances waa very satisfactory, while the singing was very good. Miss Donn, of Timaru, sang two songs, " Jessie's Dream," and " Barney O'Hea," in a manner that won for her great applause. Messrs Cox and Weber, created much amusement by singing comic songs. Mr McCarthy, accompanied by Miss Quinn, played a delightful violin solo in his peculiarly finished style, and on the whole the social, which wound up about 1 a.m., was most enjoyable, indeed, we Have seen few socials in which all seemed to have enjoyed themselves more heartily. It should not be forgotten that the decorations were carried out by Mr trunnion, and that they wore all that could be desired. Indeed, Mr Gunnjon is becoming an artist in decorating halls. Preparations are already on foot for the ball of the season, which will be held next month. This wo expect wjli prove one of the greatest events ever held in Temnka. People are coming from long distances to it, and the committee are determined that nothing will 1)3 left undone to make it a success,
