DISASTROUS FIRES.

St, John’s, July 10. Two-thirds of St. John’s, Newfoundland (not New Brunswick, as first cabled) have been destroyed by the fire. Six Uvea were lost. Not a single public building or mercantile house escaped. One vessel was burned in the harbor, but the rest steamed away to sea. The fire originated through a match being dropped in a barn, and only stopped when there was nothing more to burn. The damage is estimated at £4,000,000. Warships are conveying food from Halifax. Relief funds have been opened in all the Canadian cities. The fire extended from the town to the neighbouring villages. Six persons were drowned and eight burnt to death during the progress of the Haines. No water was available. Ten thousand people are homeless. July li. Fifteen thousand people have been reqfleyed homeless by the fire. Twentytwo, lives were lost. The Bishop had a narrow escape, and find from the burning town very scantily dressed. Christiana, July 11. One half of Christiana, the capital of Norway, has been burned down. The Bank of Norway, the Savings Bank, and the Post Office were destroyed. The damage is estimated at 7,000,000 pv-owns.
