TEMUKA WESLEYAN CHURCH.
The first of a series of winter entertainments in connection with the above Church was held on Tuesday evening, in the new Parish Room, Temuka. The Rev. Mr Bellow, who organised the entertainment, on apologising for some unavoidable changes upon the programmme, stated that it was intended to
provide several evenings’ amusement during the winter, partly with the object of reducing the circuit debt, and also with the view »f raising somewhat the musical taste of the young people. The next of the series would be a lecture by Mrs Smalley, of Waimate, upon the life of Frances Ridley Havergill, the poetess, and in connection therewith songs of her composing would be sung. On Tuesday evening the programme, as far as the selection of songs went, justified the chairman’s remarks, but owing to several of the performers suffering from colds, and the acoustic properties of the room being spoiled by a sparse attendance, the fullest effect was not given to them. The performance commenced with a pianoforte selection by Miss Every, after which the Rev. J. Dellow, who was in good voice, sang ,e The Mighty Deep.” Later on, with Mr Low, he sang “ The Pilot Brave.” Both items were applauded. Miss Dale, of Timaru, sang, very pleasingly, “ Robin Redcoat,” and subsequently “ The Lost Chord.” In response to an encore she sang “ Home They Brought Her Warrior Dead,” and each item found favor with the audience. Mr Robson, of .1 era Wine, who was not in truest voice, was successful with “ The Gauntlet,” and responded to an encore. ajso sang “ The Bugler.” Mr Sim, owing to domestic sickness, was unable to contribute a promised recitation, but his place on the programme was filled by Mr Gaze, who read a selection from “ The Vicar’s People,” which was appreciated. Mr J. MoOaskill sang e< The Young Brigade,” after which Miss Andrews received an enqbre for her song “Anchored.” To supply another item she kindly sang “In Old Madrid.” Miss G. Brown gave a very spirited recitation, “ A Hero < >f the Nineteenth Century,” and received hearty ayplause, and Mr W. Smith was encored for his singing of “ Jack’s Yarn.” He responded with “ Sally in Our Alley.” lyfr Strong contributed “ A Friar of Orders' Gr6V,’ r wlpcE completed'the programme. Tire accompaniments were played by Misses Wethey, Guy, Andrews, and L. Brown.
