FOOTBALL.
, TEMUKA 2xd v WAIHI 2nd. The above match took place at Winchester on Thursday 7th inst., and after an evenly contested game resulted in Temuka winning by 2 points to nil. The ground was in capital order for fas) play, and for a junior match a fair amount of passing was indulged in. A good number of spectators were present to witness the game. During the first spell no score resulted for either side. In the second Morton, for Temuka, by a dodgy run scored near the comer flag. The kick at goal was entrusted to Fenton, his attempt going very wide. Morton played a good three-quarter game for Temuka. Brosnahan at half-back was also good, while Polaschek shone to advantage in fast following up. G. South, for Waihi, played a splendid forward game, being the mainstay of that division. H. Opie at three-quarter, played well, making some fast runs at times. H. Morrison played a first-class game at full-back, kicking well and picking up clean. He also collars well, and with a little more practice he would be quite capable of tilling the position of full-back in a senior team. He wants to take his kicks a little sooner than he does, instead of trying a short run before kicking, as on more than one occasion through this fault he was grassed before geting his kick. The game was not a friendly one, but we think this was not altogether the fault of the players. Such expressions as " Scrag hiin," etc., should never be heard on a football field. Much of this unprincipled language was due to the bad manners of certain young men present, who by their uncivilised conduct urged the players and to speak and act in anything but a fair manner. Not only did these onlookers indulge in dismal howling, but frequent oaths were to be heard. This kind of thing disgusts respectable people who go witness a game of football, and tends to give this pastime a bad name. In the future, whether it be the case of onlookers or the players themselves, the names of those guilty of committing the aboVe mentioned offences will be made public, and we trust this will be a warning to those concerned. We hear one gentleman is going to report two offenders to the Rugby Union, and consider this a wise step. Mr W. Lewis carried out the duties of referee, and with the number of disputes arising had a lively time of it ; however, he discharged his work well. Messrs H. E. Smith and D. McCaskill acted as touch line umpires.
