Sydney, July 4. The strike of Broken Hill miners, as a protest against the mine owners insisting on the determination to stope ore by contract, has begun. About 0000 men are affected, July 5. There is intense excitement at Broken Hill over the strike, and it is believed that the struggle will be a bitter one. The mines are carefully picketted. A trolly laden with goods for the officials was stopped by a gang of men, who destroyed the contents. Notice has been posted giving the managers of the Proprietary and Block 14 mines twenty-four hours to quit the town, London, July o. Mr Gladstone believes that if the miners are unanimous nothing will prevent their obtaining the eight hour’s limit but that universal reduction in the hours of labor is still remote, Washington, July 3. One hundred and fifty thousand bootmakers have struck at Pittsburgh.
