POLITICAL NEWS.
The Hon. Mr Whyte will have to run the gauntlet in the Legislative Council. He has been twice before the Court and dismissed on a charge of conspiracy to defraud the Government. A Government official in Auckland was sent to gaol through his means, and another in Wellington has a good chance of following suit. The Legislative Council will doubtless make that chamber too hot for him. The Government will not recommend giving any compensation to “ ex-Judge ” Edwards. It is proposed to place Maoris on the same footing as Europeans, and instead of giving them special Maori representatives let them throw in their lot with the Europeans and vote for all candidates. They would be better off. An opinion is gaining gx-ound that the Government do not mean to make any additions to the Upper House, being inclined to let the Council die but. The Government intend to establish farms on which to settle the unemployed. The upshot of the Bryce affair will, it is said, be that a resolution will be passed removing the votes of censure on Mr Gisborne, Sir Julius Yogel, and Mr Bryce. Through the instrumentality of Mr Taylor, of Sydenham, the Government intend to remove the disabilities under which Catholic children labor under at present. Under the regulations Government offices are not open except to boys who have passed the standards in the schools. As there are no Government inspectors there are no standards in the Catholic schools, and though a boy might be highly educated he has no chance of getting into the Civil Service, as he has not passed the standards. This is going to be remedied.
