THE ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —As a supporter of the Geraldine County Acclimatisation Society, and a lover of legitimate sport, I was very pleased to read your report of the society’s annual meeting held a few days ago, and to note the sound state the society is in in every way. As an Opihi angler I have, on behalf of several others and myself, to warmly thank the society for the able efforts they made to keep the bar open, and to trust that during the next fishing season they will be equally courteous to their license holders. With their efforts to acclimatise quail and pheasants I wish them every success; and I trust that “ free hare shooters ” will give the new birds a fair show—not bowl them over at every opportunity they get, in and out of season, as I hear and fear is too often the case. I also hope that the council will carry out the recommendation to restock the rivers with trout. In Otago this is the most important feature of that society’s fishing department, and I note by their annual report that thousands of young fish were turned into the rivers during last year. It is well known that among trout purely natural production yields very poor results, and that the Societies’ must, if they have the welfare of anglers at heart at all, restock the rivers. Now that angling is so popular the death list is very large, and complaints were made last year that the “ rivers ” were poor —that fish were getting scarcer. In conclusion, I have good authority for stating that the same of the Temuka waters is becoming more widedly known outside the Colony, and that the number of visitors from the aister Colonies and the Old Country is likely to be larger than ever during the coming Summer.—l am, etc., Gossamer.
